Holiday Season 2011

I hope everyone who celebrates it, had a warm, safe and happy Thanksgiving. I didn’t get to post before hand, but I wanted to share some of the things I am most thankful: An awesome house of our very own, a wonderful and understanding man that I never get tired of being around, a supportive family that lives nearby and get to see often, a sprinkling of friends that add variety, adventure and fun to a life that might be dull otherwise, a fun job with a steady paycheck and coworkers who mean so much to me, wonderful memories and experiences that will be with me forever, a pesky cat that hates everyone but Matt and I, my health (that I should be MUCH more thankful for) and a great body that I should take better care of.

Gingerbread House Making Contest
Friday night I held my Sixth Annual Gingerbread House Making Contest. I hope everyone had a fun time. I think there were 19 entries and over 25 people (little kiddies included) in attendance.

The winner was made by Dacia. She had told me beforehand that she had a great idea and needed to get her secret ingredient right before the event.

Yep, that girl loves her some bacon! There are more pictures from the night over at flickr.

So, now that it is officially the 2011 holiday season I’m trying to create a list of things I want to do.

-winterize the windows to keep the house efficient and warm
-put together the advent box with little presents

-Put up the tree and decorate it
-hang stockings from the mantle
-decorate the outside of the house

-make this year’s ornament
-go sledding (once we have snow)
-listen to plenty of Christmas music
-buy meaningful Christmas presents for family
-think of a good exchange project idea for extended family Christmas
-productive and fun vacation week between Christmas and New years

-make another snowflake wallhanging.

Renegade Loot 2011

9.10.11 Renegade Chicago
Time for my Renegade 2011 loot post. As you can see above, I was able to hit up the photobooth again. Here’s last year’s.

This year was a great success for finding goodies and a hit on my wallet, as you will see below. I dropped a few pretty pennies, but picked up some lovely treasures at the same time.

Last year I bought a fox shirt from Gnome Enterprises and it is hands down the most comfortable shirt I own. Also, every time I wear it I get compliments.  So, this year I had to get another and I debated getting the fox shirt again (because I LOVE it that much) but in green this time, but went with the buffalo shirt after all. It make me think of the prairie and I love me some prairie.

I’ve eyed these little brooches by MigrationJewelry on Etsy before. I was glad to see them at Renegade and purchased this orange marmalade one that wasn’t smiling or frowning, but just a straight across mouth. He cracks me and I love him.

I bought a half set of these “GRACIAS” letterpress cards from YeeHaw. The colors of my cards are more vibrant and less pastel-y like the ones pictured.

9.11.11 Renegade 2
I bought this chalkboard bunting banner from KillsideKrafts. I think I might hang it on the front door with a little greeting.

9.11.11 Renegade 3
I love this little leather pouch from Romantique. Not sure what I will put inside of it just yet. Love notes, prayers or tiny treasures to keep close to my heart.

9.11.11 Renegade 6
It’s true, I don’t even have pierced ears, but I plan on making these earrings from Eaganaise into a necklace.

9.11.11 Renegade 5
I purchased this mini terrarium from Black Forest Clockworks. It has a couple on a park bench. The man is just chilling back and the woman is fist pumping, so yeah, it’s pretty awesome. It’s already on our mantle.

9.11.11 Renegade 4
This black snap double cuff bracelet from Vert Moderne is made from recycled bicycle inner tubes and I’ve been wearing it ever since I bought it. The other bracelets I just purchased at the PaperSource and they are made from repurposed materials.

9.11.11 Renegade 7
And last, but definitely not least, here is a twig ring from Species By The Thousands. This was actually the first purchase for the day. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve hunted Etsy for twig jewelry, so this was a perfect find for me.

It was a great year!

September is here

Drive in movie, Indiana Dunes, birthday and ice cream cake, BBQ for a friend, stir fry, home decor, chalkboard paint, and sidewalk chalk, fall leaves, Sandwich Fair, new couch, settling in, open house, thrifting, Jonamac and a big chair photograph, sweaters, mailart, meeting goals, Last Fling, Renegade, walking in Illinois Prairie, road trip to enjoy the fall scenery

Going to the Drive-In

A quick note, as it’s been weighing on my conscience that it’s halfway through the year and I haven’t posted about my yearly lists yet. I didn’t put together a list this year because I wanted to take time to finish the things on my previous lists. I’d rather work away at items that are important, rather pile on more obligations to the point that it is no longer enjoyable. That being said, earlier this week I was thrilled to cross off an item from last year’s to-do list. I went to the drive-in movies for the first time in my life. After driving past the Cascade Drive in (West Chicago) over 10 years ago now, I’ve known that was the drive-in I wanted to attend.

6.8 Drive In 8
Talking to people beforehand about the drive-in, I gathered that it was fun enough, but nothing amazing. I tried not to build myself up as much as one can, when they’ve been wishing to go to the Drive-In their entire life. Honestly, I’ve wanted to go for so long, but it had to be with just the right person, and for the right movie and at the right time of the season, etc. Matt and I have been together now for 10 years, so I think it was finally safe to say he was the right person, lol.
6.8 Drive In
Like I said, this item was on my to-do list from last year. I added myself to the Cascade Drive-In movie theatre email list and for over a year they’ve been sending me the movies they are playing each week. Last year, without fail, when a movie that I’d finally want to see came to the drive-in, it would turn out that I had already seen it in the regular theater weeks before. So this year, I told myself not to rush into the theaters to see everything and save it for the drive-in. When it came down to it, I finally said if I wait for the perfect day and the perfect movie, it will never happen so when I saw the new X Men movie was playing I thought it would be good enough.
6.8 Drive In 2

I think most drive-ins are usually double headers and this one was no different. Bridesmaids was the second movie, and although I wanted to see it, we ended up going on Wednesday, and we both had to work in the morning. We left it up to how we felt at the time to leave after the first movie or stay for the second feature. Also the movie theater was over an hour’s drive away from us.

6.8 Drive In 3

Keeping low expectations of the experience worked out because immediately driving in I knew it was going to be awesome and even better than imagined.  The lot was all gravel so you didn’t have to worry about mosquitos. They had the posts with speakers attached and before the movie began they were playing classic hits from the 50s. Both Matt and I really enjoyed that. The theater really made their best effort to make it like it had been back in the day. You could listen from your speaker on the post, put the speaker in your car or just tune to 88.5 on your radio and listen that way. We played the movie through our radio and had our windows open so we could hear from all the other speakers in the theater and it was almost like stereo coming from all directions.

6.8 Drive In 4

We got there about 20 minutes before the first show was supposed to begin (8:30 p.m.) and there were a few cars there before us. By the the time the movie began we heard an employee’s walkie-talkie announce that there were 110 vehicles and I saw more cars still pull in after that. So, they did decently for a midweek showing.  That day had been unusually hot, but by the evening it was so nice out. We were able to have the windows down and sunroof open and there was a cool breeze. If we go again I’ll try and remember to bring a blanket and pillows.

6.8 Drive In 5

They had a snack shop where you could buy all sorts of goodies, and they didn’t seem too expensive either. Popcorn for a dollar! Who’s heard of that at a movie in the last 50 years? But beforehand, heading to the movies Matt and I picked up some sandwiches to bring with us. It’s a perk you can’t enjoy at the regular movies. You can also bring your pets and lawn chairs. There were several groups laying in truck beds or SUVs to watch the movie. Before the movie began I even saw people that brought a baseball and mitts to play catch. They also had picnic tables in a grassy area and permanent BBQ grills for anyone to use.

6.8 Drive In 7

Probably because it wasn’t dark enough yet, the movie (or rather commercials) began about 20 minutes late. But once again to my enjoyment, they played all of these old classic commercials from long ago advertising things they carry in the snack shop. It filled in even more than in this picture above, but they kept all the cars in certain rows. I’m not sure, but I’d guess they could probably pack over a thousand cars in there. I can imagine how full it would be on a Friday or Saturday night.

6.8 Drive In 6

Here is a picture I snapped of the moon as it was getting darker. By the end of the movie the wind had REALLY picked up and  it had been so hot and dry the last few days that dust from the gravel started picking up. A couple times I got stuff in my eyes, and that’s not good for this contact lens wearing girl. X Men was good and it ended a bit after 11, even though Bridesmaids was supposed to start at 10:30. We were more than content with our experience, so we decided we were fine leaving early. Good thing too because a few minutes after we left the sky opened up and rained and poured the whole way home.

I had such a good time and I’m so glad that it was just Matt and I, but I’d definitely want to go again. I think it would be fun to get a group of people in multiple vehicles.  Also, I think they open up a full 2.5 hours before the movies begin so you really could make an evening of it with BBQing and everything.

Day 19 – notepads

For Day 19 Thing-a-Day I finally padded my brown and black notepads. I’m not sure if I said it when I posted the full stationery sets in this same style, but the bunting is made from craft paper that I drew patterns on with a sharpie and an illustration pen. The bright and cheerful sets were just made from decorative papers in my stash.

They are now available in my Etsy shop.

Day 16 – painting

Day 16 Thing-a-Day

I’ve been eying these deep square wooden cradle boards from Michaels. They are unprimed and the kind of beautiful thing that you buy and just fondle and never want to make a mark on it, for fear of ruining it’s potential. You could use them for painting, or encaustic or flip it backwards and create a shadowbox from it. Well, yesterday I found this 50% off (yes, that’s FIFTY PERCENT) coupon online. It’s good through Saturday. Please, click it and print one out for yourself. I was like Robyn-Hood of Michaels and handed out a couple of them to random strangers in the store. Anyway, I finally bought one of the cradle boards and started a painting I’ve had in mind for a while.

It’s only 8″ squared, but this is still huge compared to how big I usually paint (thank you business card sized artomat canvas paintings).

If it’s not obvious, this is a work in progress shot. I haven’t destroyed it yet, but there is still plenty of time for that :O

Day 11 – Favorite Rings

Day 11 - Favorite Rings

Ever since I posted the picture of my favorite necklaces, I’ve wanted to do one with my favorite rings. I just realized after looking at the necklaces that I could do an update because I have bought so many awesome necklaces since I took that original picture years ago.

I’m not into your “standard” jewelry shop jewelry, meaning gold, platinum or the like, with lots of bling and sparkly diamonds. You are more likely to find me wearing a ring from a gumball machine than a ring from Tiffany’s. It’s not a price thing, but an aesthetic thing. To me, those “luxurious” rings looks no different than the junk mass marketed knock offs that you can buy at any department store for $20. They are just so AVERAGE, and they have no personality. What I’m drawn to are unique pieces that have a story behind them, and each one these rings does. You can click on the image to go to the flickr page and if you hover over some of the rings you read about their unique stories.

So, for Thing-a-Day 11, I am sharing this collection of my absolute favorite rings. I probably have another 30 in my ring boxes, but the ones pictured here are the most special to me. Oh, and that reminds me. I’ve been wanting to make a display ring box, like the one Rosa made. Here is her tutorial.

Day 9 – Me in my studio

Day 9 – Me in my studio, originally uploaded by robayre.

Thing-a-Day Day 9 – A while ago I read a suggestion of using a picture of yourself in your work space, as a picture space on your Etsy listings. I thought it was such a brilliant idea. Tonight I had Matt take this polaroid of me. It’s just one little corner of my studio.

This probably won’t be the final or official picture. I think I’d like to take some with natural daylight coming in the room.

Day 4 – Drawing THIS LOVE

Day 4 - Drawing THIS LOVE

Day 4 Thing-a-Day – I finished my contributing piece for the “Drawing THIS LOVE” project. I found out about this opportunity through Artist Catherine Campbell’s blog post here. Her friends are making a music video and they are releasing each frame as a drawing for someone to color in and send back. Once all the pieces are complete they will put them all together to release the video. AND GUESS WHAT! You can participate too. Just go to their website http://www.drawingthislove.com/ and sign up. The only rules are that you have the make the background blue and it can’t be altered or colored in on the computer. The website has the video to watch, so you can see the animation and hear the song. They’ve also started adding some of the frames into the video and if you are quick enough with the pause button you can see some still frames. It’s very cool.

I hope my piece is acceptable because it seems that most pieces have all been colored with colored pencil, and my background is collaged. I didn’t see anywhere that it indicated you had to use coloring pencil, just that you can’t color it in on the computer. I used old maps and painted them blue, then I tore the maps up into little pieces and glued them back down all jumbled up. Some of them were kind of green, even after painting them blue because the map page was originally yellow, so after everything was glued down, I went back over it with blue pastels. For the face I used watercolors and just kept it very loose.

edit: I just did another. Forgot to mention that you can keep coming back and getting a new frame, once you upload the previous one. The number I just got today was frame 596 and there are over 2000 frames total, so there are plenty of opportunities to participate left.
2.4 Drawing THIS LOVE2

For this piece I colored the background in blue boxes in crayons, and then went over it in a dark blue. The head was done in dry pastel and colored pencils. I enjoy doing the background better because I have a hard time on the face trying to figure out what is what. Is this still part of his nose? Is his mouth open? Are those teeth or his top lip? Etc.

Day 3 – Handmade Moleskines

Day 3 - homemade moleskines

For Thing-a-Day 3 I made these fake mokeskine cahiers with scrap cardboard from work, some white paper, a staple/stitch machine at work, and some creative juices of my own. These are similar to some other books I made that have all sorts of random papers inside.

Day 3 - homemade moleskines
I rounded all the corners of the covers and inside pages with a paper punch and then used my xyron to adhere different things to the covers. Each book has a rubberband around it to keep it safe. The top left is black drawing paper I cut out in a chevron pattern. Top right a real polaroid I took of a huddle of garden gnomes. Bottom left, some watercolor that dabbled on and then cut out. And, the bottom right are some vintage yearbook pictures. Get a load of Kathleen’s romantic distant gaze.
