A Pretty Collection: Silver and Gold

Rilo kiley - silver lining by epb21
I was your silver lining, but now I’m gold.

Here is a pretty collection in silver and gold.

This week I added the first new item to my etsy shop in a very, very loooooong time. The item is the silver and gold paper garland above. It’s based on a tutorial I posted last year, but I loved the garland enough that I wanted to make some to share.

Bow Tie Rings

my rings

Back in February, during Thing-a-Day, I designed a bow tie ring made from fabric. I’ve finally come back to those and created some specifically for my shop. They are now available here in a variety of colors and sizes. If you see one you like, but not in your size, just send me a message and I’ll create a custom listing for you.

Chevron Button/Magnet set

I had the idea to make some chevron patterned button sets the other day. I don’t know if it is just me (because I’ve always been so obsessed with black and white patterns, especially stripes) but the chevron pattern seems to be hot and popping up everywhere.

I designed the gray background pattern on the computer, printed it out and then used my fine illustration pen to fill it in. I love how the hand drawn line work gives it an additional texture and more of an organic feeling, than if it had been solid, crisp lines.

These 1″ buttons are now available in my Etsy shop, as either pinback badges, or magnets.

Day 19 - notepads

For Day 19 Thing-a-Day I finally padded my brown and black notepads. I’m not sure if I said it when I posted the full stationery sets in this same style, but the bunting is made from craft paper that I drew patterns on with a sharpie and an illustration pen. The bright and cheerful sets were just made from decorative papers in my stash.

They are now available in my Etsy shop.

Day 17 - Stamp

Earlier this week we were cleaning out our car and Matt found a bag from Dick Blick where I had purchased a huge sheet for Quick Kut for making stamps or prints. I ran across this bag again yesterday and decided to make my own mini stamp like some of the awesome ones I’ve seen out there on Flickr and Etsy.

2.17 stamp progress

It’s definitely a lot harder than I was hoping and once again I have greater respect for those that make stamps. At first I was going to just do a simple circle with stripes, but it just wasn’t looking how I pictured it. I took a break and then suddenly it came to me… my little balloon man! I’ve been drawing him for over 10 years and he’s even my flickr avatar. My friend Nicole (that lives in Seattle) has always loved him and has told me on several occasions she is going to get a tattoo of him someday. He came out really cute, so now I think I’ll either have to send him to her, or make another to send to her and keep this one for myself.

I couldn’t find any tutorials on how to attach a handmade stamp to a wooden disc base so I just had to wing it. I scored the back of the stamp with an Xacto and used hot glue and it seems to be holding up fine now. To show you some of the awesome stamps people offer over on Etsy, I’ve created a treasury. Check it out!

I’ve also seen that Swap-bot has a whole category for stamps and I must have seen some stamps in my flickr contacts stream where someone said they doing a swap. I think it would be fun to do a handmade stamp swap, but before I do that I need to either get my tools sharpened, or use a much denser carving material. The Quick Kut is so soft that it actually is harder for tiny precise work, than if I were carving a wood block for printmaking.

Day 13 - new stationery sets

Before Christmas my sister asked me if I had ever thought of making a bunting notepad that would be more “manly” as opposed to the more feminine bunting notepad and stationery set I already carry. The answer was no, I hadn’t thought of that, but I often get the greatest ideas from others, so for Day 13 I created a new bunting in black and brown.

I’m so thrilled with this new stationery set and notepads (I have printed some notepads, but not padded them yet.) Like my other stationery sets, they come with 20 sheets of lined stationery and 10 envelopes. I drew the patterns on the bunting by hand. The envelopes are all solid brown, handmade by yours truly, and are self sealing for your pleasure, um I mean, ease. I have just added one set to my Etsy shop.

Thanks for the idea, Chris!

Finished Project round-up

I’ve been meaning to share some finished projects for a long time now.

handmade and available in my etsy shop

It’s no secret. I’m a yoyo fiend. Back in August I got the idea to make some zipper pouches covered in yoyos and I have finally finished and added three to my Etsy shop. I love how they came out. My favorite is the one above. It was by some weird luck that I found a zipper that matched the fabric perfectly and now I want to make more with solid colors. I think it displays the texture of the yoyos so much better. Something like that would be perfect for a wedding.

My sister gave me the idea to add wrist straps. This makes them a perfect size for a clutch or wristlet to use all alone, rather than to keep inside your purse. The straps are attached to the zipper pull and are easily removed.

I quilted all the yoyos by hand, then sewed the purse itself by machine. I anchored the yoyos to the pouch, so they are on there sturdily.

And then last month I showed a progress shot of some jewelry pieces I was working on and forgot to show the finished product. Here are the rings. The one of the left is made from a retired library book’s pages. The one on the right is made from a vintage world map print.

Book Lovers Ring  vintage map ring

I loved the one on the left so much I wanted to keep it for myself.  It occurred to me to just make one for myself, so I did that this week. It’s funny how excited I was to have one for myself. I wear handmade all the time, but it’s almost always from other artist’s work.

custom order

I love it when customers come to me with GREAT ideas for new products. Like earlier this year Claire wanted some of my notepads, but on a larger paper and then asked if I had envelopes. Ta-Da! Why not turn my bunting designs into stationery? Then for the above commissioned piece - a customer asked if I could make one of my treasure boxes but with “you are my favorite” on top. Brilliant! Why didn’t I think of that before? I’m sure I will be making some more of these.

Lastly, a friend recently got a puppy. He’s a maltipoo. He was so tiny (under 2 pounds) and when they took him outside he’d just start shaking from the cold. So tiny, in fact, that they couldn’t even find any pet coats or sweaters that would fit him, so I made this little coat from some fabric I had on my shelves. It’s a red and white print of skulls and cross bones :)

I made it at home, just guesstimating his size and I was amazed that it fit him like a charm. It just has a strap underneath and they loved that because then when they take him out to to the bathroom he doesn’t accidentally “go” on it, like he would if it was a full bodied sweater. It wasn’t until after I made it that I realized they could probably also make some really stylish sweaters for inside just from old patterned socks. A hole in the toe, a couple slits for his legs and he’d be super cozy.

Grass & Stars Mini Zine No. 2

I’m so excited to announce that I have finally finished my second issue of Grass & Stars. It’s still a mini zine, but not as small as the first teensie issue.

I’m thrilled with the final outcome. It has articles and artwork, as well as a comic and interview with a stranger. I’ll tell you, those last two parts are what kept me from getting this issue out much sooner. The comic is the third comic I’ve ever done and all of them have been part of a series called “How to…” The “interview a stranger” article is also supposed to be an on going article in Grass & Stars. I had the idea originally when I first wanted to make a zine, way back in high school. It’s something I know would definitely push me past my comfort zone because I’m not the type of person to talk to strangers, let alone ask them if I could interview them, take their picture AND publish it. It scared me so much, that I basically chickened out for the first issue and just interviewed myself, lol. When I finally did the interview for this new issue, the person was so sweet and kind. It was a great first interview and I’m sure they will get easier for me from now on out.

The zine is 16 pages long and has a limited edition run of 26 numbered books. The cover is a hand colored relief print. After 26 the originals are gone, further issues will be open-ended reproductions, so get one while they are available.

Oh, and I can cross this off my 2010 to-do list and this makes me very, very happy :D

The new zine is available in my Etsy shop now, and if you never picked up the first issue, that can be found there as well.

Documenting the fall

In the last week Matt and I have been doing some rearranging. We moved our “living room” which was previously in the finished basement, up to the actual living room area. The office, which was previously in the “living room” is now in the finished basement. Matt’s brother and sister-in-law were so kind to give us their 61″ HDTV and there was no way we were carrying that down the stairs, so instead we just did a switch-a-roo. The reason they gave us their amazing HDTV was because they decided to upgrade to a 3D-HDTV! and it is amazing! I’ve never been too keen for 3D movies, but they had us watch a 3D Imax movie about the bottom of the ocean and it was the first time ever where I felt like things were actually coming out of the screen at me.

Then this weekend we carved pumpkins with our friends Tom and Nikki. It’s something we do every year.  I only have Matt and my pumpkins pictured here because the full group shot is on my other camera and I left that in my best friend’s car. My pumpkin is on the left. Usually I always carve the same pumpkin ever year, but this year I was inspired by this link from Martha Stewart via  The Dainty Squid.

Last week this painting arrived in the mail. It was actually a painting I made and sent out for a top secret project. I loved the finished product so much, and I was so afraid that it would end up getting lost or tossed and just unappreciated, so I was thrilled to have it back in my possession. It’s based on a collage that I shared earlier this year.

And lastly, today I made this Etsy treasury.

Please click on over and view it. I love all the pieces I featured and think they deserve some attention :)
