Instagram

My instagram obsession continues on. For a while I was getting kind of annoyed with all the filtered photos posted online, wondering what happened to real (as in undoctored) photography. Sure, I’d contributed with my hipstamatic uploads, but it seemed like every.single.picture in my flickr contacts was uploaded straight from some app. I think the turning point was when I took this picture of the car. Everyone has cameras in their phones nowadays and this allows us to document our lives more regularly. Our memories get filtered through our emotions and these photo apps allow us to play up those emotions quickly and easily. And as much as I love taking pictures, editing them and sharing them on instagram, I equally love the social aspect. I really enjoy looking at every one else’s contributions and comments.

Earlier this month I realized I was about to hit 100 pictures on instagram so I took the above picture to celebrate. Since around the time of the car picture, mentioned above, I think I’ve posted at least one picture to instagram every day. I’m making no commitments, because, well, we all know how I am about that, but I hope to keep it up as long as I am inspired.

Have you seen where you can design photo albums online specific to instagram and get them printed? How cool is that? I might want to do that, but then again, I could easily print them myself and assemble a book of my own. We will see.

Mailart 365 153-159

I present more of my mailart postcards for the mailart365 project. Notice how I’m only posting 7 postcards each week. This is not going to help me get caught up, but at least I’m not falling further behind.

When I was little my godmother gave me a little pin that said “Robyn, strength of character”. As a child it didn’t really mean much to me, but as I’ve gotten older it became more and more important. Unfortunately, I have no idea where that pin went, but I’ll always remember those words

Earlier today I was catching up on my blog subscriptions and was delighted to discover that Shannon of Happiness Is had featured my chalkboard mailart postcards. I did a double take “wait, did I click on my own blog?” Thank you so much Shannon, it made my day :D

Future Robyn

Yesterday was a great day! I usually take my birthday off so I don’t have to worry about people making a fuss at work. But this year, with having already taken off plenty days for the move, I decided to go in and use my day off later. I went to work and hoped that it would be a day like any other day in the office. Everything was going great and no one said anything. I’m sitting in my office in the afternoon when I hear “So this is where you work?” I turn around to see who is speaking, and realize it is my best friend Erica and she has this HUGE thing of birthday balloons. Oi. Talk about being embarrassed. Then naturally, the rest of the day everyone is coming in and wishing me happy birthday and asking about the balloons. It’s not that I don’t like my birthday, it’s just that we don’t “do birthdays” at my current employer, which then makes any to do seem kind of awkward. At my previous long term job it was a different story. Birthdays were huge and they went all out and bought cake, ice cream, balloons, a live plant as a gift, and they ALWAYS “tricked” you into coming into a room where everyone would be and they’d sing to you.

It's the anniversary of the crash of oceanic flight 815 AND my birthday! thank you #crabica for the balloons!

Here is a picture I took with all the balloons.

The balloons were wonderful and best friends know just how to make a gal feel loved. After work we had over friends and family. We ordered out pizza and my sister brought pie from Baker’s Square, which I ordered specifically because I haven’t had any in years and have been wanting it for a long time. Afterwards we played the Game of Things which everyone always enjoy and which always ends up being a source of hilarious catch phrases later. After everyone left, Matt and I put on the original Tron movie with Rifftrax. In one scene there was a screen capture that said “sept 22″ which was the date we were watching it, AND my birth date.

What are the chances? I made Matt pause it so I could take this picture. And while we are speaking of September 22nd, and if you are a Lost fan, you might remember that it is the anniversary of the crash of Oceanic Flight 815.

Earlier this week I read about a writing exercise on Elise’s blog The Argyle Wale, where you imagine yourself in your ideal future and list out the circumstances or qualities that you would have. I thought that this practice would be perfect for someone who just turned one year older. So here it goes:

This is how I’d like to envision my future self.

Robyn has updated her whole website and touches is up quarterly, each year.
Robyn has a schedule and updates her blog regularly.

Robyn has no qualms about approaching stores to carry her items.
Robyn’s original pieces are sold in a select group of galleries and gift shops.

Robyn’s etsy shop can’t stay stocked and the items that are listed sell out in a short amount of time.
Robyn is approached to sell and feature her artwork on websites, galleries and in stores.
Robyn started a monthly art/craft group with workshops and classes.
Robyn is surrounded by other like minded (art/design/craft) entrepreneurs.
Robyn eats a nutritionally balanced diet and has the energy to get things done.
Robyn is physically fit and carries herself with confidence.
Robyn has a wardrobe she is proud of and reflects her personal style.
Robyn’s home a creative reflection of Matt’s and Robyn styles.
Robyn rearranges and changes out the furniture and artwork in their home quarterly.
Robyn has a smart phone that doesn’t break the bank ;) ha, ha, yeah right
Robyn has time to do all the things she wants to do and doesn’t feel stressed about it.
Robyn goes on fun adventures with her friends and family.
Robyn keeps journals and scrapbooks to remember said adventures.

Okay, I could go on and on forever, but I think I’ll stop now otherwise this post will never be published. Maybe I’ll come back and update it if I think of things that definitely should be added to the list.

September 21st

colonial

Today would have been Nikki‘s 30th birthday. Earlier this morning I left a post on her facebook page sharing a little message. I want to share the story here but in more depth.

I originally met Nikki through my friend Tom. To know Tom is to know a very vibrant character. He’s saucy and always has the best stories to share. When he started dating Nikki we hadn’t seen him for a couple weeks and then he springs on us “come meet me for dinner. I want you to meet my new girlfriend.” We were all kind of surprised because he refused to ever call the previous girl he dated a “girlfriend”. We don’t see him for a few weeks and BAM, he was already in a committed relationship.

A big group of us went out to the Junction – a local family restaurant/hangout. Nikki was so quiet and just painfully shy. I don’t think she made eye contact with anyone and I have this memory of her almost hiding behind Tom, like he were a security blanket and we were a pack of rabid, starved wolves. To be honest, we kind of could be that way when it’s one person against a big group of people that all know each other and have countless inside stories and jokes. But to be honest, I can be just as shy and awkward, I just had the comfort of my close friends on my side. Much later, unbeknownst to me, Matt would inform her that we had already classified her as a “dud” after that first meeting. (smacks hand to forehead)

It was probably a few weeks after initially meeting her and we were at Otto’s, a local bar. Side note: Otto’s was the place that Tom and Nikki met for the first time, and it was on her 21st birthday. I was sitting next to Nikki on a bar stool. Conversation was still a struggle and I think she had already given up any hope of making friends with Tom’s friends. In fact, she was into talking to some random person next to her when I overheard her say when her birthday was. It was one day before my own. I’ve always had a thing for people who share (or are near) my birthday. It might seem silly to some, but I felt like it was some sort of a sign. Right then and there I got off my chair and told her I had to give her a hug and I knew from that moment on we would be friends.

Pumpkins 2003-2010

(Nikki put this collage together last fall. The thing I love about it is that the top two photos were probably taken by Matt or myself. The missing years were probably years we forgot to take pictures, but we always carved pumpkins together every year.)

And we did become great friends. It was true that we were very different, but in other ways she and I were so much alike and shared so much in common. I knew things about her and felt like no one knew me in the same way she did. We both loved dragging the guys out and having adventures as well as creating and keeping traditions. Having birthdays so close and celebrating together was just one of the many traditions. My birthday will always be tied to hers. I miss her like crazy and always wish she were still with us. From things like the songs that pop up on the radio every time I’m thinking about her, and the box turtle my family just brought home, to the address number of our  new home, I know she is still around.

Renegade Loot 2011

9.10.11 Renegade Chicago
Time for my Renegade 2011 loot post. As you can see above, I was able to hit up the photobooth again. Here’s last year’s.

This year was a great success for finding goodies and a hit on my wallet, as you will see below. I dropped a few pretty pennies, but picked up some lovely treasures at the same time.

Last year I bought a fox shirt from Gnome Enterprises and it is hands down the most comfortable shirt I own. Also, every time I wear it I get compliments.  So, this year I had to get another and I debated getting the fox shirt again (because I LOVE it that much) but in green this time, but went with the buffalo shirt after all. It make me think of the prairie and I love me some prairie.

9.11.11 Renegade 1
I’ve eyed these little brooches by MigrationJewelry on Etsy before. I was glad to see them at Renegade and purchased this orange marmalade one that wasn’t smiling or frowning, but just a straight across mouth. He cracks me and I love him.

I bought a half set of these “GRACIAS” letterpress cards from YeeHaw. The colors of my cards are more vibrant and less pastel-y like the ones pictured.

9.11.11 Renegade 2
I bought this chalkboard bunting banner from KillsideKrafts. I think I might hang it on the front door with a little greeting.

9.11.11 Renegade 3
I love this little leather pouch from Romantique. Not sure what I will put inside of it just yet. Love notes, prayers or tiny treasures to keep close to my heart.

9.11.11 Renegade 6
It’s true, I don’t even have pierced ears, but I plan on making these earrings from Eaganaise into a necklace.

9.11.11 Renegade 5
I purchased this mini terrarium from Black Forest Clockworks. It has a couple on a park bench. The man is just chilling back and the woman is fist pumping, so yeah, it’s pretty awesome. It’s already on our mantle.

9.11.11 Renegade 4
This black snap double cuff bracelet from Vert Moderne is made from recycled bicycle inner tubes and I’ve been wearing it ever since I bought it. The other bracelets I just purchased at the PaperSource and they are made from repurposed materials.

9.11.11 Renegade 7
And last, but definitely not least, here is a twig ring from Species By The Thousands. This was actually the first purchase for the day. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve hunted Etsy for twig jewelry, so this was a perfect find for me.

It was a great year!

Mailart 365 139-145

Hey, remember my Mailart365 project? Yeah, it’s been a long break, with house buying, and moving, but I haven’t forgotten. Even before the move I was already 3 weeks behind but I don’t plan on throwing in the towel yet. Yesterday I decided to finally count up exactly how far behind I was and I’m officially 8 weeks back. 7 after this post.

For years I’ve wanted to use chalkboard paint in my home. Now that we are home owners it’s finally going to happen. We have some ideas, but they haven’t been executed yet. In the meantime, while I’ve been on my mailart break I’ve been wanting to do lots of nonsense sketches in my sketchbook. It occurred to me to make some chalkboard painted postcards so I could do nonsense sketches as mailart, but still make the pieces interesting. The cards have all been spray fixed so they won’t smudge in the mail.

Today is a very exciting day, Renegade in Chicago! I hope I can find some wonderful treasures and that I don’t get too annoyed with the crowds. Also, I hope they have the photobooth again.

Weekend in Instagram Photos

I think this last weekend was the last unofficial weekend of summer. Actually, the weekend started out like summer and ended like fall.

Been up since 12am. Thankfully I slept for four hrs right before.

I took this picture this morning. I had work overnight last night :( and was freezing and wearing two hats.

But on Friday my sister, sister in law, nephew and I went to the Indian Dunes.

Wave
It was perfect weather for the beach too. Hot. The sand felt like it was on fire and we were humored by my nephew who was afraid to step off the beach blanket and burn his feet. This was fine because then he snuggled up on our laps.
Toes in sand and surf
I dipped my baby toes in the water. Matt laughed when he saw this picture, all my friends make fun of my stumpy “baby toes”.

Lake Michigan
It was my nephew’s first trip to the dunes, other than when his mother was newly expecting him :)
Reading at the beach
I got to do a little reading on the beach.

Saturday my sister and I went to Naperville’s Last Fling. I have fond memories seeing bands perform at the Carillon park and have been wanting to go back for a couple years. I had this vision of how it was going to be. It’s a late summer evening, so it would be cool enough to wear a sweater, blankets covering the sloping park towards the stage,  and I was thrilled to find out that the Gin Blossoms, one of the first bands I ever saw live, would be performing there. Flash forward to reality and the actual day of the event.

It was raining with lightening and thunderstorms. We debated even going, but we had already bought tickets and we didn’t mind getting wet, we just didn’t want to get struck by lightening standing in an open field. I imagined that we were going to be 2 of 50 people that actually showed up but it was surprisingly packed, probably thousands of people there. Poi Dog Pondering opened up and they were a very energetic and lively act. We brought our raincoats and had to zip up a few times. It was annoying though how everyone else had the not-so-brilliant idea of bringing an umbrella and then we couldn’t see anything over them. Fortunately it cleared up enough and the umbrellas came back down.

Blue Mustang in a back yard
Sunday it got chilly, but the sun was out. Matt and I went for a walk in the morning and I took this picture of a blue mustang parked in a back yard. I love walking through alleys. Front yards are always kept so sterile and presentable, but backyards are where the real personalities comes out.
Studio getting unpacked

My sister came over and cracked the whip helped me unpack my studio some more. The walls are empty, but it’s getting there.
Story telling around the bonfire

Then in the evening I went to a bonfire at my sister in law’s parent’s house, where we worked on our story telling skills while keeping warm by the fire.
The corn was tall, the sky was blue, the clouds were white

Then on Monday (labor day) Matt and I went to a cookout at his parent’s house. Later, since it was labor day and there are always huge sales, we went shopping for a new couch. I can’t find what I want at all in stores, but I could never imagine buying something online. It’s hard enough trying to find something in the style AND color that I like, but comfort is equally important. When I’m going to spend as much as I am on a couch, you better believe the stars should align to have all three elements in one magnificent couch, or better yet, couch and love seat combo! If you have any couch buying knowledge or tips, I’d love to hear them.

All pictures were taken by me on my iphone and adjusted in instagram.

September is here

Drive in movie, Indiana Dunes, birthday and ice cream cake, BBQ for a friend, stir fry, home decor, chalkboard paint, and sidewalk chalk, fall leaves, Sandwich Fair, new couch, settling in, open house, thrifting, Jonamac and a big chair photograph, sweaters, mailart, meeting goals, Last Fling, Renegade, walking in Illinois Prairie, road trip to enjoy the fall scenery
