Grass Pouch and Handbound Book

While I was packing for the craft show I found several items that I had made to sell, but then never listed. Things that I LOVED and thought others would probably LOVE as well. They were sitting patiently in my Etsy shelves with all the other products, stacked and ready to package and send off. It kind of goes to show how my real passion is for making things, and NOT necessarily for photographing, editing, composing and listing items. I’ve had the afternoon off, so I took some time to photograph and share a few new items in my shop.

First, this fun Grass Zipper Pouch. I made my first grass pouch, probably 10-15 years ago and so in that time I’ve been able to add a few touches that make them that much sweeter.

The outside is plastic grass fabric, and the inside is red and white gingham, like a picnic blanket. The final touch is an ant and adorable mushroom on the zipper pull.

Next is this adorable handbound book, with a green binding and a graphic alphabet cover on the front and back. The fun doesn’t end there because much like the grass pouch, the inside has a surprise.

The inside pages are made from a variety of papers I’ve collected or made. There’s graph paper, watercolor paper, lined paper, manilla, illustration pages and more.

Both of these items are now available in my Etsy Shop.

Thank you for stopping by and don’t miss out on a chance to win a free chalkboard ring or treasure box, leave a comment on the post at this link before the first of April.

craft show

Don’t forget to enter to win a chalkboard ring or treasure box. Leave a comment on the previous post. You have until March 31st to enter.

Last weekend I did my first craft show in several years. It was the first show for this particular event and there weren’t too many shoppers, yet it was by far the best show I’ve done so far. The picture above was a “back stage” shot. I always use my yoyo quilt as a table topper and I think it helps draw a crowd, although our (my mom, sister and I) tables were pretty packed, so there wasn’t much of the quilt visible.

Ring display
Above is the ring display I made from Rosa’s tutorial. Usually it holds my own personal collection, but I used it as a display for the craft show.

It was the first time I’ve been able to take my coin/capsule machine out. I filled it with little handbound books, vintage map buntings, jewelry, scrappy leaf keychains, felt fortune cookies with coupons for my etsy shop, and candy. While I made pieces to put in the capsules I envision that the people who would want to buy them would be people like myself (grown-up that still likes toys). It wasn’t until later that I realized that there would probably be plenty of children at this event and as I remember from being a kid myself, gumball machines are like magnets for kids. Sure enough, all the customers I had on the machine were little kids. It was so cool to see their excitement, at an event that was not necessarily “for kids”. They’d see it and their faces would light up and then they’d start yanking on their parent’s arm for quarters. There was only one kid who got something handmade that actually wanted candy instead and I was happy to oblige and open the machine for him. The rest of the kids were all so thrilled to get their handmade treasures. One little boy got candy and was so sad because he wanted a scrappy leaf key chain, so I traded him up. Another little boy bought a vintage map bunting, when I asked him if he would prefer candy instead, he said no. By the time they left the show I noticed he was wearing his bunting as a necklace.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

DIY Custom Chalkboard Paint Color, Project and Giveaway

3.21 chalkboard paint tutorial4

If you’re like me, you’ve seen plenty of DIY tutorials out there to make your own chalkboard paint in any color you want. Those tutorial’s material list goes something like this: paint color of your choosing and then start listing things like grout… and that’s exactly when I stop reading. Who has grout on hand? And how does one buy grout? And even if I bought grout, I’m guessing it comes in some HUGE bag and all I need is a couple cups worth. The other day I was at home and had a project in mind but wanted to use a different color chalkboard paint than the standard black I had on hand. I know you need a grout type product, something that adds a chalky, toothy type texture to the acrylic paint and so I started hunting around the house. Then it hit me. I have that gritty product already, and it’s in my studio… GESSO! Gesso is a substance often used as a base for all types of painting and even other types of artwork. Its wikipedia page says it is actually a paint combined with chalk. I tried mixing it with a green acrylic paint and it worked perfectly, adding just the right amount of course texture to grab onto the chalk when applied later.

3.21 chalkboard paint tutorial
Materials: Paint, Gesso, Paint Brushes, and Cup

Here’s what you do: simply mix it 50-50, or up to 75% acrylic and 25% gesso mixture. Acrylic paint is naturally kind of glossy when dry, but you want your final product to be matte. Because gesso is white, it is going to lighten up your acrylic paint substantially, keep this in mind when choosing your paint color. You’ll want to pick an acrylic paint that is that much darker than what you want your final product to look like. I used a very dark green to get the desired chalkboard green I was going for.

Apply your  new chalkboard paint to your project surface. You may want to apply a second coat depending on how evenly your first application was.

After it is dry you will want to treat your new board with chalk. Scribble, or scrape your chalk all over the board and rub it around evenly. Now your chalkboard is ready!

3.21 chalkboard paint tutorial2
A fun and easy project to use your new chalkboard paint on would be making a customizable ring, as seen at the top of this post. Other than the paint you just created, all the materials can be found at your local craft store for under $5: New chalkboard paint, little round discs, inexpensive  adjustable ring blanks, super glue or gluegun glue, paint brush and chalk.

You can buy these round wood blanks at most craft stores in the wood isles. You can also find other shapes that would work as well, like stars or hearts, or if you are super crafty you might choose to cut out your own shape using a small saw. Using super glue or a hot glue gun attach the adjustable ring blank to the back of the ring. Once it is dry and solidly attached you can paint the top of your ring with the chalkboard paint.

And if you like the project, but aren’t interested in making one for yourself, I have created a small handful of rings and little treasure boxes with chalkboard paints (my own and the black is store bought).  Leave a comment on this post and enter a chance to win one of the pieces of your choosing. Let me know which one you’d like if you won or just say hello. Like me on facebook for an extra chance, don’t forget to come back here and leave an additional comment and let me know that you did. I will select one lucky winner on April 1st.

Spring is here

Matt and I ate dinner on the patio last night. We were just remarking that we would be happy if the weather could stay exactly like this all year round, not too hot, not too cold, sun and just the perfect amount of clouds over a blue sky. Right then we heard little kids playing down the street, and one of them exclaimed “This Is The Best Day Ever!” We agree, kid, we agree!

Everyday we are seeing more and more flowers and plants that weren’t there just a day or two ago

Draw Something

3.19 draw something
I’ll admit it, up until 2 or 3 weeks ago my iphone was just an expensive instagram tool. But since then I’ve discovered the pictionary-like app, Draw Something and have become completely addicted. In that time period the app must have exploded in popularity too, because 1. it went from there being two other people on my facebook friends list that also played to dozens, and 2. I have the free app, and so I must endure occasional ads, but they went from ads for other app games to ads by big businesses like Clorox and USPS.
swing copy
The game is addicting because you have to earn points to buy things like colors (you just start out with the primary colors) and bombs that remove letters and help you guess what the other person is drawing.
My best friend and I were talking about it. When you are guessing a drawing you get to watch the progression as the other person draws, or if they have to scrap their drawing and start over. I like to take advantage of the fact that you can start over and you may want to show multiple screens worth of information, as long as the person is paying attention. When a person guesses correctly, the entire finished drawing shows up for a moment and Erica said it was like a fun little surprise to see a really thorough drawing then.

Draw something also periodically shows screens with “Best ofs”and I always think it would be so cool to get on one of those screens. Images aren’t automatically saved anywhere online or to your phone, at least not that I know of, and so once your drawing has been sent and played by the other player it is gone forever. I had been playing the game for quite a while before I thought to do screen caps on some of my drawings. To get a screen cap on your ipod touch or iphone, just press the power and home key at the same time. You have to be quick and time it perfectly because there is a delay. The images above, other than the best of page, are drawings I have done for hotsauce, boombox, frodo, slide and swing.

I encourage you to check it out. You can get the app for free and endure ads, or pay and be ad free. If you check it out, look me up, I’m robayre as usual.

Tuesday

This happened this morning.

So, it’s the second Tuesday of the month and that should mean this is a Found Art Tuesday post, but even though I mentioned it on Friday’s post, the weekend came and went and I completely forgot about it. So, instead of sharing my Found Art Tuesday today I’m sharing this painting above that I created this weekend. It’s a 12 inch squared canvas acrylic painting in black and white. I really like it a lot and am debating on keeping it for myself, or offering it in my shop. Maybe I’ll make another to put in the shop.

Last night while laying in bed I had an idea for a great Found Art Tuesday piece, but it’s a little bit more involved. It will require more work AND I’m really racking my brain to think of where I should leave the piece. Stay tuned and hopefully I will share it very soon.

Paper, Paper Everywhere and Not a Place to Work

Bits o paper
On Saturday I decided to tackle the disaster zone that my studio had become. An overly cluttered studio is not a place that fosters creativity. I’ve come to realize that my paper addiction is 90% of the problem. Between paper I’ve gathered for mixed media, collage, mailart, scrapbooking, paper spiral jewelry, paper packs and recycled envelope sets, my paper collection is out of control. I have two Ikea shelves, a flat storage shelf, and bookshelves in my studio and even that isn’t enough. After trying to organize, put away and find homes for the paper that I have, I had the sudden overwhelming desire to just get rid of it all. It would be so nice to have empty space and a fresh start, I’ll just throw it all away. Of course, I didn’t and couldn’t, there is too much in there that I LOVE and would miss. Realistically, I need to just go through it all and do a value judgement piece, by piece, “Is it necessary?” if not, pitch it. That’s just soooo much work and it would be so much easier to just pitch it all.
paper pieces2
I did end up tackling the Ikea drawers that have paper separated in categories of:
-scrapbook/ fancy archival paper,
-paper with adhesive,
-novelty (tags, doilies, slides, etc.),
-antique papers,
-wrapping paper,
-commercially printed papers (booklets, pages, paint samples, etc.)
-scrap papers that have my writing and painting, and sketches, etc.
-and the tiny scraps and bits and pieces that I can’t bring myself to get rid of, AND truthfully I feel like this drawer is the true gem of all the drawers and the one I use paper from most often when creating artwork.
camera phone pic

Just for the record, all the pictures above are all from my studio, but they are older pictures and what would qualify for the “bits and pieces drawer”. The middle picture is actually the pieces of paper that I collected for a swap that I did on swapbot, where everyone filled a few envelopes full of bits and pieces of paper and then received several envelopes full of paper in return. The funny thing is, I remember thinking, I just want to send the envelopes and I really don’t need any more paper in return.

Inspirational Link Roundup

Looking for something... Anything to take a picture of for instagram today. Here it is.

We made it to Friday and the weekend is just about here. I’ve got a bunch of great links I wanted to share, so here I go:

After seeing this on Happiness Is… I bought one of these butterfly jars from ThinkGeek (with a monarch) and it is awesome. I bought it to take to work and make me happy, but it actually has ended up entertaining our cat and so it hasn’t made it to work yet.

For all the mailart peeps out there, have you seen this tutorial by Hanna for making a book binder to house all your collected mailart? Why didn’t I think of that? The majority of my mailart was just hanging out in a card catalog and I had to file through it to enjoy, but now I can put it in a book to properly display. Also, don’t forget to sign up for the mailart postcard swap over on her site. You have until TODAY (Friday) to get in. The deadline was extended because her site was unexpectedly down for a few days.

This sample embroidery piece by TheSmallestForest makes me want to join in the Take A Stitch Tuesday project.

I love these little enameled ladybug pins by Diana Eng (remember her from Project Runway). I love them as a collection, but unfortunately my budget wouldn’t allow for that, each bug is $75.

How Tuesday on Etsy showed us how to make our own leggings, pretty cool huh?

Spring is so close and that makes me want to break out my bike early. This post hasn’t helped.

Warmer weather also means garage sale and estate sale season. I loved this Thrifting Guide series ( 1, 2, 3) by Frecklewonder.

I loved this post by Pam Garrison about her painting class with Jennifer Mercede. So much beautiful art.

Originally watching the TV show Pushing Daisies made me want to take up bee keeping. BUT, watching this beautiful mini documentary Made By Hand about bee keeping made me want to start watching Pushing Daisies again.

The other day I was stopped in my tracks while at Target when I thought I saw a pair of converse shoes that were black and white striped. Turns out it was just the lining that was striped on a solid gray pair of shoes. BUT, this tutorial on converting converse into slip ons has also caught my attention if only because they used striped elastic. Can you tell I’ve had striped shoes on the brain?

Lastly, don’t forget that next Tuesday is the second Tuesday of the month and that means FOUND ART TUESDAY! It’s a perfect weekend to make art and then stealthily leave it behind and brighten someone’s day.

one of those days

polaroid self portrait 2000, originally uploaded by robayre.

I’m having one of those days where I have tons of things I could do, plenty of projects I’m working on, and yet, I can not get myself to do anything. It’s not even 9 p.m. but I feel like going to sleep for the night. Inspiration? I’ve got plenty of it. Motivation and drive? That’s something I could use a huge dose of.

Last night I had the weirdest dream where Matt and I, and possibly another friend but I can’t remember who, decided we were going to go on this adventure type ride. I have no idea what it was but imagine a rollercoaster ride, crossed with bungee jumping, crossed with skydiving but in the middle of a rainforest or jungle. At any rate, it was really popular and we had to wait in line forever. Once we got to the front of the line we found that you have to be examined to make sure you are fit enough to go on the ride. No problem. But there’s one thing they have to do before you go on the ride, they break your leg! They put your leg in a vice and give you a really clean fracture. I guess it was because the ride is so strenuous that you are guaranteed to break a leg at one point, and if it happened on the ride it would be a really messy break. So, they pre-break it and it is neat and clean and will heal easily and quickly. In the dream I was perfectly fine with it, and not worried or pained to get my leg broken. Fast forward to after the ride and I was so happy to have gone. I told other friends and family and they all wanted to go on the ride. We were in the car driving to the place and all I could think of was that I wouldn’t mind getting my leg broken again to go on this thing, but wondering if my family knew that they would have to get their legs broken and not wanting to tell them for fear that they would turn around and go home.

A Crafty Weekend

3.5 leaf ring
I had a pretty crafty weekend. I started out creating a load of new resin jewelry pieces. I’m doing a craft show with my mom and sister later this month and I just wanted to create some extra inventory. Whatever I have left over after the show I’ll add to my etsy shop. I made a bunch of new leaf rings and large pendants and a bunch of paper spiral rings and pendants.
Carved a zigzag stamp for my little books
Then Saturday evening my mom and sister came over for some crafting. I had the idea to carve a stamp with a zigzag pattern to make more books like this previous one I made and sold. It’s funny to me – My sister said “you can make them in different colors too” and it hadn’t even occurred to me because I’ve always been such a black and white stripe addict.

A little bit later in the evening my SIL and nephew joined us. Doc colored on the chalkboard wall and hammed it up showing us his “orange juice face” which basically looks like he just bit into a sour lemon.

3.5 felt fruit
Then, since Dacia was over, we started making some felt play food for my nephew’s second birthday which is next week. I saw this pattern online for orange slices and then modified them. I liked my orange so much I just had to make a lime, lemon and grapefruit.  I never really got into the softie felt food art/craft phenomenon, but these are for actual children’s toys. I have to admit it was fun to make and they came out looking great. Now I can’t wait to make some sweet peas.
