Day 28 – new banner

One of the projects I wanted to get done earlier in Thing-A-Day was to redesign my banner and blog. It’s come down to the last day and I decided to at least work on putting together a new banner.

This is a very rough version. The colors are all wonky right now, so I’ll take a better picture tomorrow and I’m sure I will be playing around with it plenty in photoshop. I really want the cold press watercolor paper texture to show. I’m thinking of taking it through the sewing machine for a swoop that will tie the two parts together.

It’s been a long time since I’ve updated my banner, but here are a couple old versions.

Day 27 – Watercolor Postcard

Another postcard inspired by Water, Paper and Paint book by Heather Smith Jones. This piece was inspired by project no. 5.

Day 26 – Polaroid Stamp

Hello everyone. My name is Robyn, and I’m stamp making addict.

2.25 polaroid stamp2

Who knew, when I began this month that I would become obsessed with hand carved stamps. I lay my head down on the pillow at night and all I can think of is new stamp ideas. And that is precisely where the idea for this one came. I have a huge collection of Polaroid cameras. Well, I guess huge is a relative term, I have about 15, give or take a few. I went through them all, searching for the perfect inspiration of what a Polaroid camera “looks like” and chose this one, as well, as another that had the rainbow stripe down the front, so I blended the two together.
My creation

I love perusing all the handcarved stamps on flickr, here is a little collection I made from other artists. If you click on the picture, it will take you to the post where you can find the links to each artist.

Day 25 – mail art postcard

Today I made this postcard, using inspiration from project 2 and 4 from the Water, Paper and Paint book by Heather Smith Jones.

Since I’ve taken watercolor classes in the past and have really explored the techniques already, I decided to turn the projects from the book into postcards (rather than full sized sheets) and send them as mail art. Do you have her book? Would you like to do a swap from one of the projects? Leave a comment or send me a message and let’s do this thing?

Day 24 – business cards

Day 24 – business cards, originally uploaded by robayre.

For thing-a-day 24 I made business cards. Um, kind of. Well, an opportunity arose at work, where a print order came in for (3) 8.5×11″ 4-color sheets printed on cover stock. The press sheet holds (4) 8.5×11″s so there was an empty spot. I was putting it together and just couldn’t bring myself to waste the space, so last minute I started scrambling for images to print as business cards. I printed 6 business card images and my manager made a bookmark. Of course I went with some grass and some clouds, but I came across this image (today can be an adventure-chevron) I designed last year. I had originally planned on printing it poster size, and perhaps I still will, but in the meantime, I’ve now made business cards with it.

These are just some samples that I cut down by hand, but when everything is trimmed, I will have 500 of each image. Now, what shall I do with 500 business cards of clouds, or grass? I’m not exactly sure, but I had an idea for a new challenge where I might try and come up with something new to do with them each day for a given period. For example, day one – I could create a stamp to print my info on the back, day two – I could write kind messages on the back and leave them out for people to find, day three – I could sew them through my sewing machine and make a bunting garland, and so on and so forth.

Day 23 – New Stamp

After creating my little balloon head stamps the other day I had the idea for another stamp. The design is a reproduction of my grass quote paintings and prints.

I thought it would be cool to carve the stamp, leaving the center blank so I could draw in new quotes. I originally planned that they would just be little prints, but then with all my sticker graffiti stuff, I thought it would be really cool to turn them into stickers as well. I’m still ironing out kinks in how to print them. Even though I took 5 printmaking classes in college, we never worked with this linocut shtuff. In my Relief Printmaking class we only carved and printed from woodblocks, so this stuff is really new to me. I never even did it when I was in elementary school, which I’ve heard was a common art project for a lot of people. When I made the really tiny balloonhead stamps, using a stamp pad worked fine, but I don’t know if it is because I’m running low on ink or because of the linocut material isn’t really made for ink pads, but I could never get a solid print. I had to resort to using real printmaking ink, glass plate, roller and the whole nine yards which I still had from my college years. Of course I don’t have a press, so I just had to press the stamp and burnish. I originally had the linocut mounted on a woodblock, but then realized I probably need a padding to go between the relief and the wood so I took it off. I really don’t want to have to mess with all the chemical ink again for this simple piece, so I’m going to get a fresh ink pad and hope that works better.

You can see in the top image that the ink is still wet so I couldn’t draw in any quotes yet. I also watercolored the background green, to continue the theme. This was a fun project. When I post again about my sticker graffiti pieces, hopefully there will be some of these as well.

Day 22 – Sticker Graffiti

Gah! I wasn’t able to put up my sticker graffiti for Found Art Tuesday. I guess I should have known better with the weather the way it is in Northern Illinois. The weather was great on Saturday, but did I go out? No. Instead I woke up Sunday, all ready for adventures of putting up my stickers in public places, and instead it was pouring rain all day long. Today… snow :(

At any rate, I promised to share my sticker graffiti and this picture will have to do. I will post pictures later, when I adhere them to their new homes. Before I do that though, I think I’ll be giving them some coats of a sealant. Hopefully they won’t deteriorate so quickly while being subject to the elements of previously mentioned Northern Illinois winters. Also, I made some little circle stickers (middle row) and those were so tiny, fun and quick to create. The larger ones (probably about business card size) will be run through my xyron to give it a sticky back, although I’ve seen plenty of recipes online to make sticker paste specifically for sticker graffiti. Just google “Wheatpasting”.

I’ve been really inspired while approaching this project. There are TONS of flickr groups devoted to sticker graffiti.
There’s even one devoted to “Hello my name is” labels turned into graffiti stickers.

Day 21 – Little Collages

Day 21 Thing-a-Day. I can’t believe there are only 7 more days left. I think I need to make a list and budget my days because I feel like I have so many more things I wanted to do.

This wasn’t the only thing I worked on today, but it’s the only thing I have complete, so here it is. Now back to the studio to finish working on my other project. Hint, it’s another stamp/print :)

Day 20 – Little Book Pages

2.20 Little Book Page, originally uploaded by robayre.

Here are some simple watercolor circles in my little book for day 20. It’s already day 20?

There are books out there about how to lose weight, and there are books out there about how to improve your mind in numerous ways. There are books about reversing the effects of aging on your body, but I’d like to find a book about slowing the speed of time to my mind. I just feel like time is going too fast. It’s probably just a matter of doing more, and being more productive, or maybe the opposite, slowing down and relaxing? I’ve been thinking lately that maybe chronicling what I do with my time might help. That way I can look back and see all the things I’ve done during given periods. I don’t know, but time just keeps speeding up and I wish and dream for those days as a child where I felt like one school year lasted years and years and summer break was an eternity.

Day 19 – notepads

For Day 19 Thing-a-Day I finally padded my brown and black notepads. I’m not sure if I said it when I posted the full stationery sets in this same style, but the bunting is made from craft paper that I drew patterns on with a sharpie and an illustration pen. The bright and cheerful sets were just made from decorative papers in my stash.

They are now available in my Etsy shop.
