time to grow

time to grow close up, originally uploaded by robayre.

Years ago when my mom was moving classrooms I found this really big bin of pin backed letters for a cork board. She gave them to me because she never used them. I’ve had them for about 4 years, not knowing what to do with, or how to use them. Well, a couple weeks ago the Found Art Tuesday theme was Grow, and I came up with this idea to pin a phrase onto a tree. With it being spring and the theme being grow, it just seemed appropriate. This piece is not like my standard Found Art, in that it isn’t a piece that someone could take with them. The piece still goes along with the idea of guerilla art and while people are taking this path, I hope it catches their eye and makes them stop and think a bit.

Hi, I'm Robyn and I was Hatched from a Kinder Surprise Egg. Graphic Designer by day, Maker of things by night. I have worked as a graphic artist professionally since I was 16 years old. Went on to get my Bachelors of Art from NIU. I like to share my Artwork online at flickr.com/photos/robayre and on my own personal website http://www.robayre.com. I also have an online shop http://www.robayre.etsy.com where you can find more of my "crafty" sorts of things, as well as a random piece of artwork here and there. Oh, and I'm also an occasional contributor to Artomat (artomat.org).

  1. That is so neat! Love the idea of using something that has been laying around for several years and then finally finding the perfect way to use them. And your photo is so interesting. Whoever wanders down that path will surely feel a positive surge after reading your message to them.

  2. Neat. I love the idea.
Did you make sure the metal of the pins is safe for the tree? (Sometimes trees die because people put the wrong kind of nails in them…)

  3. Great. I love the idea.

(If this shows up, it means the verification works now, i.e. the code you have to put in before your comment is posted.)

  4. I think I addressed this question on flickr, but the metal back pin is no more than 1/4 thick and just barely stuck enough into the bark to stay up. I’m sure most fell down after the first breeze, it was hard enough to get them to stay for the picture. I did a bit of reasearch and it seems that there should be no harm for pinning only to the bark.
