flickr favorites

I love to look at my flickr favorites and am fascinated how although they are other peoples’ images I am able to so clearly see my own style through the collage.

Paper Source Warehouse Sale

Here is a shot from the Paper Source’s Warehouse sale yesterday. They have it twice a year and The Makers art group went. It was a mad house, paper everywhere we got there an hour before close. Things seemed to be priced very high to me, for the scattered mess that it was. But when I checked out my clerk was very kind, giving me piles of stuff for a dollar or two and under pricing things greatly, and even gave me others for free. I walked out with a HUGE bag with tons of paper singles, books, several packaged sets, book canvas, posters and more all for under $30. If you had been a letterpress owner or a business making invitations you would have been in the money. Next time around, maybe we’ll try and get there earlier, then again, even at 1 I was a little freaked by the crowds of frantic people ripping through boxes and piles. I can only imagine what they had earlier in the day.

Amy Sedaris

Last week Amy Sedaris was on an episode of My Name Is Earl, check out this funny clip from the show (it doesn’t have her in it).

Today her book “I like You: Hospitality Under the Influence” was released. Check it out!

I am such an Amy nerd.

etsy

Just posted some new things to my etsy shop. I love them all. My sister came over and spent some time helping me take pictures and write the product descriptions. Here are a couple of the items:

I know I’ve probably said this before, but I would really like to continue and list new items a couple times a week. We will see how it goes.

Also, WE GOT SNOW - In October!!!

pinholaroid

I just found this link for altering your polaroid camera into a pinhole. Looks relatively simple, but out of the 5 polaroids I own, not one is a close-up. I must scrounge through the salvation army for one…or two (one to keep intact, tee hee).

Also, Pam Stone is back on the air, yay! Sadly, she is only on once a week, but it is for four hours. That lady makes me laugh! You can download it in itunes and if you have never listened to it before I highly suggest you go back and download from as far back you can. One word of wisdom for you, that had me confused when I first started listening: She tapes the show in a shack on her own farm property with her best friend Pippi in the shack with her. For whatever reason, Pippi never talks but has a bell that she rings to respond. For the longest time I wondering what was up with the bell. Enjoy!

audio internet

I just thought of a great invention (if it hasn’t been created already). An interface that translates every website into audiofiles. That way I could download them to play on an mp3 player or listen to while I work on other things away from the computer. I got the idea while listening to this Craftsanity podcast about etsy and realized it was just as great as surfing their message boards, but I was able to get work done at the same time.

Shouldn’t there be something like this for the blind already? Hmmm, have to do some research.

Hole-On Ex Bust

For my birthday my sister bought me this pinhole camera kit that I had been eyeing forever. Maybe I should add pinhole photography to my list of things to do in my life, but it just doesn’t seem to ever happen. Unlike an experience, it seems, most kids did when they were in grade school, I’ve never done any pinhole photography. Yes, In ALL my college photography classes I’ve never done pinhole. When I signed up for a community course in pinhole photography the class was canceled because I was the only one who signed up.  I’m just lucky that way.

I was so excited to get this camera, The Hole-On Ex. And then a little less excited while building it and seeing how skimp the instructions were. The camera seems to focus too much on form rather than function. I ended up omitting some minor parts that were purely for show. I shot a roll of film at Shabonna Park experimenting on exposures and was so excited to go pick up my film. Only when I went to pick it up they said “no charge, film was exposed”. I had taped it closed so the only place I imagine light leaked was at the location of the “detachable lens” Why they made the lens detachable is beyond me. To me it seems like it is just asking for problems. I also found the on/off switch very difficult to maneuver without jostling the whole camera, and pinhole cameras depend heavily on their stability. My sister then found the following review on amazon and I couldn’t have agreed more.

  1.  I bought this kit for my 9-year old son (younger than the package’s recommended age), but even with me doing a lot of the work, it was extremely difficult. Some of the most difficult parts are only decorative. The package says that all you need is glue, a ruler and a pencil, but one instruction calls for double-sided tape. Also, the directions indicate that you need Elmer-type glue, but it was impossible to get the pieces to hold without using more powerful hobby-type glue. (We used Duco cement.) Also, the directions say to light test your camera, but don’t tell you how. We shot one role that didn’t work, but will try again.

One good thing I can say about it is that it actually did forward the film as it was supposed to. I think if I were to use it again I will really disassemble it to a freakish frankensteinish shape of it’s former self to get it to work correctly.

Life List

So, as I’ve mentioned on here before, riding in a hot air balloon is on my list of things to do in my life. When I was a teen I had a longer list and I’m not sure where that list is anymore. I’ve been watching the Ellen Degeneres show and this season she has been talking a lot about life lists. I think it started seasons ago when Mandy Moore was on her show and mentioned having a list and one of them was to mow the lawn.  Ellen had her get on a riding lawn mower so that she could cross something off her list. This season she has been helping guests check things off their list. She also had a family on of a woman, Ann Nicole Nelson, who died in the world trade center on 9.11. Much later her mother was using her daughters laptop and found a file that contained a list of things Ann wanted to accomplish in her life. Here you can read the New York Times article that contains her list.

My list is pretty short (5 items), but here it is.

1. Sell my artwork (which I have done now that I have sold through Artomat and Etsy, thank you everyone!)

2. Be comfortable in my body (This is something I feel like I always struggle with and would love to accomplish)

3. Run a 10 minute mile (Since August I have started going to the gym every morning before work, thinking about this list I realize I should start focusing on this goal more)

4. Road trip across the country (The farthest roadtrip I have taken is to the Niagra falls with my sister)

5. Ride in a hot air balloon (I’ve been to a balloon festival, but have not had a ride yet)

So I guess I should add more things to my list. Nikki just sent me this article which I think is pretty great. Also, I’ve heard this book is really good.

Do you have a list, and what’s on it?
