my life in pictures

I just realized I have a bunch of pictures on my itouch that are worth sharing here. Pictures are in no particular order of importance.
self portrait in stripes for Decor8

Here is a self portrait I took for Holly Becker of Decor8. She asked her readers to take self portraits of themselves in striped shirts and then she would post them to her “Stripe Mania” pinterest board.

a gifted ring from Rosa

You know you’ve made it in the world when people send you jewelry in your likeness, lol. Today I was beside myself thrilled to find this unexpected present, a ring in my mailbox from my friend Rosa. How awesome is Rosa? It has a painting of me over, wait for it, wait for it… black and white stripes. She knows me so well.

How I'd like to spend my days

The other day while I was getting ready for work, grumbling about what I’d rather be doing, I was inspired to write out this list on the refrigerator’s dry erase board. Also of note, the peek of the list to the right. It’s my long term wishlist and has things on it like gumball machine, compact printer and XM Radio. Then some clever person (looking in Matt’s general direction) started adding their own wishes to it, things like a jaguar, a mansion, a teleporter, time machine and trillion dollars. Those are good things to wish for too.

hand picked strawberries

Tonight my SIL and I started making fruit leather. Started… because it won’t be complete until tomorrow. I’ve been wanting to make fruit leather ever since they used to have those food dehydrator infomercials in the 90s. Dacia actually picked these strawberries from her grandma’s garden.

watching matt play hockey

Sunday night my friend Tom and I watched Matt play hockey…

matt watching softball

and then Monday night Matt and I watched Tom play softball.

macarons from Erica

My best friend Erica recently went on a vacation to Las Vegas. While she was researching things to do there she found that she could buy one of the world’s best macarons. She was so kind as to bring me back a bag that she babied all the way home, so as not to get crushed. Once I ate them I realized what a challenging feat this truly was.

garden

I can’t believe that I haven’t posted about the garden. My sister, SIL and I started a garden at my parent’s house. We (well Dacia’s dad) tilled the grass and we cleaned it all out, and then we built the fence and planted our vegetable garden. This picture was from the first day the garden was complete. It looks much different now with all the plants growing.

cat in box

Our cat Bishop loves his boxes, and I couldn’t resist waking him up from inside this one to take the picture. He has a very sleepy look on his face.

I want, I want

And here’s my nephew Doc. He’s at this stage now where he uses sign language that his parents taught him, but then modifies them to  suit his own needs. It started out with the sign for “more” at the dinner table, and has evolved into shaking his hands at the wrist for anything he wants. Right here it looks like he just has his arms up, but since it’s not video you can’t tell he was shaking his hands. He wanted me to pick him up. Why? Because I was holding my ipod and he is tech obsessed :)

Through My P.O. Box

It’s a little bit late, but here is that picture I promised of mailart that has come to me through my P.O. Box recently. This picture does not do it justice at all. Each individual piece has so much character and attention to detail. You can view it larger here.

I have two pieces that I want to share pictures of their own.

6.10 mailart Rhya

This is a mailart diorama piece from Rhya in Canada. I had just discovered Rhya and her amazing work through fellow mailart blogger Jessica Gowling. Rhya and Jessica send each other mailart with missions and I just love that. Rhya makes these amazing, beautiful and detailed little dioramas with her illustrated characters. I thought about messaging Rhya to see if she would interested in trading mailart, but then I got intimidated so I didn’t message her. But, wouldn’t you know it? A couple days later I got an email from her asking if I’d like to do a mailart trade. I was thrilled. I had just started following her blog, but I didn’t want to ruin the surprise so I stopped updating in case she showed the piece she sent me. Even after it arrived I didn’t open it right away because I wanted to save it as an incentive for when I got caught up on my outgoing mailart.
6.10 mailart Rhya closeup

There are so many little tiny parts to the diorama and while I was positioning the parts I got swept away in the fun. Afterwards I realized it reminded me of when I was a kid and would play with my Smurfs Colorforms. When I finally went to Rhya’s blog to catch up I found a post about this piece she sent me, and you can read it here. Apparently, each raccoon is based on one of her hometown friends. In the picture above you can see some little characters (bottom left) and they have this breathtakingly detailed and subtle watercolor on them. When I was playing with it, I thought of them as rock friends, but after looking at her blog, I saw some similar shaped characters in a different diorama and she referred to them as spirits. I loved that and think maybe my little guys are rock/ghosties.

I loved this package and had so much fun with it.Thank you Rhya!

I want to share one more package that I got recently. It wasn’t necessarily mailart, because I purchased part of it, but when my order arrived it was filled with so much more than just the postcard I bought. I’ve been admiring Oly’s work on flickr for years now. Her work is so unique and very stylized.
6.10 mailart Oly

Oly posted to her flickr that she was selling postcards in her online shop and so I went to her shop and bought one. After I bought the postcard she messaged me letting me know that she likes to take her time and put together special packages with each order and that was fine by me. The package arrived earlier this week and opening it up was such a treat. It brought me back to when I was in middle school and had a pen pal from Japan. While I would send a letter to my penpal, she would reply back with very little writing, but with a package just filled with all sorts of presents, each part individually wrapped. That was exactly how this order from Oly was.

That penpal experience left an important impression on me in everything from my love of mail, and mailart, to the way I package things for my Etsy store as well as my Artomat pieces. I always want whatever I send out to give the recipient a memorable experience.  This order from Oly reminded me that not only are all the little extras important but the presentation is just as important. Wrapping each item causes some excited anticipation while opening piece after piece, and while I’m not sure if I have enough time to wrap tons of tiny pieces for each outgoing etsy order, it does make me want to rethink my clear plastic cello bags that go out with every order.

Going to the Drive-In

A quick note, as it’s been weighing on my conscience that it’s halfway through the year and I haven’t posted about my yearly lists yet. I didn’t put together a list this year because I wanted to take time to finish the things on my previous lists. I’d rather work away at items that are important, rather pile on more obligations to the point that it is no longer enjoyable. That being said, earlier this week I was thrilled to cross off an item from last year’s to-do list. I went to the drive-in movies for the first time in my life. After driving past the Cascade Drive in (West Chicago) over 10 years ago now, I’ve known that was the drive-in I wanted to attend.

6.8 Drive In 8
Talking to people beforehand about the drive-in, I gathered that it was fun enough, but nothing amazing. I tried not to build myself up as much as one can, when they’ve been wishing to go to the Drive-In their entire life. Honestly, I’ve wanted to go for so long, but it had to be with just the right person, and for the right movie and at the right time of the season, etc. Matt and I have been together now for 10 years, so I think it was finally safe to say he was the right person, lol.
6.8 Drive In
Like I said, this item was on my to-do list from last year. I added myself to the Cascade Drive-In movie theatre email list and for over a year they’ve been sending me the movies they are playing each week. Last year, without fail, when a movie that I’d finally want to see came to the drive-in, it would turn out that I had already seen it in the regular theater weeks before. So this year, I told myself not to rush into the theaters to see everything and save it for the drive-in. When it came down to it, I finally said if I wait for the perfect day and the perfect movie, it will never happen so when I saw the new X Men movie was playing I thought it would be good enough.
6.8 Drive In 2

I think most drive-ins are usually double headers and this one was no different. Bridesmaids was the second movie, and although I wanted to see it, we ended up going on Wednesday, and we both had to work in the morning. We left it up to how we felt at the time to leave after the first movie or stay for the second feature. Also the movie theater was over an hour’s drive away from us.

6.8 Drive In 3

Keeping low expectations of the experience worked out because immediately driving in I knew it was going to be awesome and even better than imagined.  The lot was all gravel so you didn’t have to worry about mosquitos. They had the posts with speakers attached and before the movie began they were playing classic hits from the 50s. Both Matt and I really enjoyed that. The theater really made their best effort to make it like it had been back in the day. You could listen from your speaker on the post, put the speaker in your car or just tune to 88.5 on your radio and listen that way. We played the movie through our radio and had our windows open so we could hear from all the other speakers in the theater and it was almost like stereo coming from all directions.

6.8 Drive In 4

We got there about 20 minutes before the first show was supposed to begin (8:30 p.m.) and there were a few cars there before us. By the the time the movie began we heard an employee’s walkie-talkie announce that there were 110 vehicles and I saw more cars still pull in after that. So, they did decently for a midweek showing.  That day had been unusually hot, but by the evening it was so nice out. We were able to have the windows down and sunroof open and there was a cool breeze. If we go again I’ll try and remember to bring a blanket and pillows.

6.8 Drive In 5

They had a snack shop where you could buy all sorts of goodies, and they didn’t seem too expensive either. Popcorn for a dollar! Who’s heard of that at a movie in the last 50 years? But beforehand, heading to the movies Matt and I picked up some sandwiches to bring with us. It’s a perk you can’t enjoy at the regular movies. You can also bring your pets and lawn chairs. There were several groups laying in truck beds or SUVs to watch the movie. Before the movie began I even saw people that brought a baseball and mitts to play catch. They also had picnic tables in a grassy area and permanent BBQ grills for anyone to use.

6.8 Drive In 7

Probably because it wasn’t dark enough yet, the movie (or rather commercials) began about 20 minutes late. But once again to my enjoyment, they played all of these old classic commercials from long ago advertising things they carry in the snack shop. It filled in even more than in this picture above, but they kept all the cars in certain rows. I’m not sure, but I’d guess they could probably pack over a thousand cars in there. I can imagine how full it would be on a Friday or Saturday night.

6.8 Drive In 6

Here is a picture I snapped of the moon as it was getting darker. By the end of the movie the wind had REALLY picked up and  it had been so hot and dry the last few days that dust from the gravel started picking up. A couple times I got stuff in my eyes, and that’s not good for this contact lens wearing girl. X Men was good and it ended a bit after 11, even though Bridesmaids was supposed to start at 10:30. We were more than content with our experience, so we decided we were fine leaving early. Good thing too because a few minutes after we left the sky opened up and rained and poured the whole way home.

I had such a good time and I’m so glad that it was just Matt and I, but I’d definitely want to go again. I think it would be fun to get a group of people in multiple vehicles.  Also, I think they open up a full 2.5 hours before the movies begin so you really could make an evening of it with BBQing and everything.

Mailart dump

These are mailart pieces 76-82, more little books.

I’m kicking myself because I forgot to take pictures of these books opened flat before I sealed them shut. So, for now I just have these front and back shots. I haven’t dropped them in the mail yet, so maybe I’ll take the pictures and reseal them all closed.

5.20 Mailart books backs

I’m actually more excited and in love with the pieces below. They are on empty envelopes that I sealed shut. The addresses are written on the reverse, which is the side that seals, the opposite of the side that is usually addressed. I coated them with gesso, then applied dry pastel, watercolor pencil, watercolors, acrylic paint and colored pencil. I love, love how they came out.

The mess I made while making those envelope pieces.

And now, after this post, I am only one week behind in my mailart 365. I promise, I am not defeated yet. I hope to return in a couple days and post the pieces that should have been posted this last friday AND a load of the awesome mailart I’ve been receiving in response. I tell ya, I’ve had a PO box for a couple years now (I think) it’s never been so active.

“And, in the end, the love mailart you take is equal to the love mailart you make”
