Moving to the next level

I’ve done 5 craft shows and none of them have been any good. All of them have been very, very low traffic and weren’t publicized very well. I am very shy and extremely embarrassed when talking to new people, especially face to face about any of my work; craft or art. This dilemma was a huge factor in why I did not pursue a full Fine Arts degree, but rather a Bachelors degree in Art. For Fine Arts degrees you have to have a student show, which means that everyone there will want to talk to you about your art. So, to do these craft shows was a huge feat for myself. I had to put myself out there and talk to customers who approached my work. As I said before there weren’t many people at any of these shows but it was very helpful that the occasional customers were so kind.

For the obvious reasons, I really love the online communities that I participate in; Flickr, Etsy, Postcrossing, MySpace and so on. I can meet new people with similar interests, be absolutely inspired, and receive feedback without feeling nervous or awkward. When I was in college I couldn’t have ever imagined that I would be able to actually sell any of my artwork. I feel like I have progressed so much on my own, past what college had to offer me. I still have plenty of room to grow and develop my work, but I feel I have improved my artwork and have more sense of who I am than I ever did before. Someday, I might even be able to get so far as to have a solo show. But for now it is still baby steps and I feel very comfortable sharing work online and selling through Artomat and Etsy.

The reason I bring all of this up is that I am more and more interested in committing seriously to getting my name out there as well as selling more on Etsy. I really love hearing tips and recommendations from successful sellers. I appreciate other people taking the time to share and help others out. Some things I have been trying to do is list items more often.

Another thing that has my interest this week is finding a place to get archival art prints made. I had someone inquire if I was selling prints of that flower photo from my last post and while I would love to offer prints I’m not exactly sure how to go about doing it. Funny thing is, I’m a designer at a printing company, but we don’t specialize in small orders or art prints so it is not possible to get them done there. However, because of my experience in the field and eye for print, I am pretty picky and have high standards. I hear a lot about print places online, but I’m concerned with not being able to view samples for quality before placing an order. Anyway, I’ve been doing a bit of research and if anyone out there has a place that they really love and trust, please drop me a message or leave a comment, I’m open to suggestions.

Lastly, I was reading a blog yesterday and this artist was talking about being involved in this thing called Pecha Kucha. This is what their website says:

“Pecha Kucha was conceived in 2003 as a place for young designers to meet, network, and show their work in public. The key to Pecha Kucha Night is its patented system. Each presenter is allowed 20 images, each shown for 20 seconds each - giving 6 minutes 40 seconds of fame before the next presenter is up. This keeps presentations concise, the interest level up, and gives more people the chance to show.”

I like the idea because it is so short, sweet and informal. Unfortunately, I think that each artist speaks while slides of their work are presented behind them. Maybe if I did it, I could have someone stand up on stage and talk for me, lol, kind of like how Aimee Mann did on tour. She hired a comedian to banter between songs so she wouldn’t have to. Anyway, I thought this Pecha Kucha sounded interesting and that it might be fun to attend one to watch how other artists presented themselves. Heck, maybe it might be something I could work up a nerve to do myself, someday. I was very excited to see that they did, indeed, have one in Chicago and it is next week. Even more exciting is that it is being held at Martyr’s in Chicago, which is where my friend Jenny works.

Sweet Dream Songs

It’s after midnight, 12:36 to be exact, and I am only just now getting in all due to brilliance on my part. At lunchtime I came home and found Erica (my best friend who lives in the apartment next door) in my apartment searching frantically for a phone book. She had to be at work shortly and her car died out in the parking lot. I told her, no worries, she could drop me off at work and borrow my car. As luck would have it, I left my cell phone in the car as she drove away. No problem, I called matt from work and he was able to pick me up at 5. It wasn’t until we were debating on going to his house or mine that I realized I had left all my keys on my keychain, including the keys to my apartment. This can no longer be blamed on bad luck but pure stupidity on my part. Erica works until 11:30 p.m. and then drives a half hour to get home. So, I am finally able to get into my apartment now.

I’m about to hit the pillow, but before I do so, I thought I would share a little something about myself. I wake up just about every single morning with a tune in my head. I only realized how often this happens recently. I knew I often had songs in my head, but I didn’t realize until I started keeping track that it is almost every single morning. Sometimes I just have very vague parts of songs, either a certain chorus and no lyrics, or maybe very little music but a strong sense of the lyrics, and if I don’t immediately try to solve the mystery of what the song is then it is lost forever. It is kind of like a dream in that way, if you’ve ever tried to keep a dream journal you will know that if you don’t immediately try to recall it upon waking it will be lost forever. I will have a line of lyrics in my head and have to think “is it a man who sings this song? Is it a sad song? Are there any connotations I have with this song that might lead to figuring out what it is?” Many times I am able to google it and come up with the song. Other times the song is very strong and obvious and I will have it in my head all day long, sometimes so much so that I wake up with the same song all week long. The songs vary from songs that I obviously recall hearing the day before to songs I can’t remember hearing for ages. The songs will be in my head so strong when I wake that sometimes I think they are playing in the background of my dreams like a sountrack. So, you know how everyone always says they wish they could add a sountrack record to their real life, it is kind of like my subconcious mind does that during my dreams.

Here is a collection of songs I woke to for one week:

  • David Bowie - Dance Magic Dance (from Labyrinth)
  • Sugar Ray - Personal Space Invaders
  • Van Morrison - Into the Mystic - with a focus on the lyrics “and when that foghorn blows, I’ll be coming home”
  • Evan Dando - The Ballad of El Goodo - with a focus on the lyrics “I’ve been broken down and busted” and “Hold on”
  • Evan Rachel Wood - Hold Me Tight (from the Across the Universe soundtrack)
  • Michael Penn - I can tell
  • Elvis Costello - Allison

Monday update

I hope everyone had a very relaxing and comfortable Thanksgiving weekend! I had an extra day off  (a four day weekend) and it whipped by so quickly. Many full days, morning till late night, busy-busy-busy visiting with family, friends, going to movies, going out to catch up with friends visiting home for the holiday, art group meeting, knitting, knitting, knitting, the perfect weekend! Oh and it snowed, I couldn’t have been happier.

tangles

Actually, on Thanksgiving day itself, my mom, sister, sister-in-law and I worked at untangling the mess that was my yarn stash. With all four of us contributing, it was quite a chore and no one knew exactly how bad it really was when they volunteered. Now, everything is rolled up and put into separate bags to prevent it from happening again.

Marta got her package that I sent and she showed bits of it on her blog here. I’m getting a lot of visitors from her blog, so. . . Hello everyone from Portugal! I think Portugal must be a very creative, artistic and inspired place to live because every blog I see from there just amazes me.

This morning I was catching up on my This American Life and found out that they released the results of the Break-Up song contest. Months ago there was an episode where Starlee Kine decided to write her own break-up song and she even consulted with the king of break-up songs, Phil Collins. I highly recommend listening to the first episode and then check out what listeners were able to do with her song, it is pretty great.

Happy Thanksgiving

When I saw the pomegranates at the grocery store I was so excited. They’re still pricey, but less expensive and probably better for you than the bottled Pom. Plus they are just too beautiful to pass up.

 first snow

Matt called me up this morning to ask if I had seen the snow yet. I immediately had to get dressed and run out to capture the first snow of the season. I know, I’m that one freak who enjoys the snow.

 yarn

I’m still knitting up a storm. I think this weekend should be devoted to making, Thanksmaking weekend, yup, that sounds good to me.

Shortly, I will be making the trek over to my parents’ house for Thanksgiving, the entire 2-minute drive. For anybody else who is traveling longer distances please keep safe, wear your seatbelts! And to everyone else, who is celebrating, Happy Thanksgiving!

Always Making Making Making

This weekend, with a long list of projects that I want to and need to work on or finish, the idea of knitting came to me. It’s been a while since I’ve knit, even matt was surprised. I’m more of a spinner now-a-days, but with it getting colder out it just felt like “time to knit”. I bought the yarn last spring with intentions to make red and green mittens with it and so here it is.

extreme close up

Good morning everyone! I’m very excited because I just realized something. I took Friday off and of course we have Thursday off for Thanksgiving and that means today is HUMP DAY! Woot.

To celebrate here are some close up pictures of my anerable house rabbit, Theo. Please click on the pics to see them larger.

I’m really addicted to Etsy’s Storque. Here’s an inspirational link full of goodies for those who dream of selling big on etsy. Scroll down to read the success stories here.

I recently signed up for a paper scrap swap on swap-bot and I got a message from the person who was assigned me. She is from one of the surrounding cities, how cool is that? Of all the places in the country, let alone the world, and she was assigned a partner 20 minutes away. Anyway, I’m thinking of coordinating my own paper scrap swap. It would probably be one where you fill a #10 envelope with tons of little pieces of nice papers. No theme, just nice papers with good texture, or print patterns. Hmm, I’ll think about it.

Mail goodies

One day this week I came home and it was like I had hit the jackpot. I think I had 5 goodies (read: not bills or junk mail). One package was from Marta Mendes in Portugal. Back in the day I sent her one of my early postcrossing postcards and we’ve been flickr contacts for years. I inquired about how much she was selling her jewelry for and she offered that we swap! I was thrilled. Not only did she send me a brooch that featured one of her handmade buttons, but she also sent me a necklace and pictures and a vintage postcard. I’m so excited to finally have some of her stuff.

Then I got two of my prints that I ordered from Etsy last week. The packaging from linotte’s print was so incredibly adorable. It was put together so peciously and I think that every package should come looking just like this.

Here are my new prints. The top left from Linotte. The bearded, scarf-ed man from AshlyG and the female portrait, relief print from none other than Al Stark.

Another print available in the shop. I really like how this one came out. If you check out the etsy listing you can click on a detailed thumbnail to see the background texture up close.

I’m seriously having fun with these.

Silk Screen Prints

Yesterday I worked on some silk-screening. Finished a few prints, but was having some issues so I put everything away and worked on inking in some of the pieces I finished. Today I decided to try and make more prints, taking time to cut better-sized paper. Of course every proof sheet I pulled looked perfect and every actual print I tried to pull, on the nice quality paper, sucked. They were bad, I mean real bad. Not salvageable. I guess I’ll have to make do with the few prints from yesterday. At any rate, I’ve added a couple of the first ones to the shop.

They were super fun to make and brought me back to my college days when I took a semester of independent study in serigraphy and did several pieces that I later water-colored in. Hopefully I’ll be making plenty more of different images, especially as I cleaned the screen after today’s frustrations. In the meantime, I still have a couple more prints from Monday yet to ink in.

Etsy

srrrrrsly, I need to stop looking at etsy because I spend way more than I make on etsy.

Last week I bought:
