Mail Day

It is so gratifying to get out all the mail that I owed to people. Several things to check off my “to do list”. And by “To Do List” I actually mean planner because I just recently started trying to keep one to get my life organized. Anyway, here is a stack of papers that contain addresses for all the mail that I owe people, and then there are packages I sent out last week and below are envelopes for letters that I will send out this week.

What a relief. Now I can focus on the craft show I’ll be in next month and then I’m free to finish up the artomat series that I started LAST YEAR. I vow, No new projects until I am completely caught up, and have my apartment cleaned and organized.

free money :P

I was over at my folks’ house and my dad was telling my sister about how he went to this site and found his name, sent in some paperwork to verify he is the correct person and a bit later he gets a check in the mail for $3,700. Oh, yeah! Have you ever heard about how there is money that is owed to just about everyone, just sitting somewhere unclaimed. Well this website, is specifically for people who are owed money in Illinois. I’m addicted to looking up every single person I know and so far I have found money for my friend Bethany’s brother, my friend jenny and my old boss. Cool huh? I should start taking commission for this.

what are they doing right now?

Leaves are starting to fall and it smells like autumn.

My brother told me about a game he plays. The game is “What are they doing right now?” You think of any person under the sun and ask “what are they doing right now?” and everyone has to tell what they think that person is doing. Simple, but fun. The example given to me was “what is Katie Holmes doing right now?” I said trying to escape her handcuffs. My brother said a coworker of his gave this whole descriptive story about how she was running through a field with search lights on her and she hits a point and just falls straight down. She has reached the distance allowed on her electrical collar.

Fall is here

Saturday was my 30th birthday and as usual I have this feeling like “and what do you have to show for yourself” and it got me thinking about what what has happened, just this summer alone. So here goes my list.

Something’s gotta change

I know I’ve read before in the blogging world that what I am about to do is a big NO-NO. I am going to blog about blogging.

I’ve really been struggling with what to post about nowadays. I used to have another blog, a moblog, that I posted to more regularly than this one. It’s sad because it was just a free textamerica site and I got a lot more hits there than I do here; on my very own website that I pay for. Even the hits from people’s random searches contributed a lot more than they do here. But, I feel like what I said over there was so much more interesting and entertaining. Well, quite a while ago Textamerica decided to no longer offer free pages and without notifying me, deleted my page. Fortunately I had backed up most of it, pictures and text. I decided to look back and see what I had to say back then in 2004. What was so important to say and why was I able to do it so readily without fear and inner doubt, like I do here? I think that it was because it was just a free site, and it didn’t really have an attachment to my name. With this site, I was hoping to be more professional and art centered, so I feel like what I blogged about before wouldn’t really be acceptable on this blog. What I have realized is that as time has gone on, I’m taking myself more and more seriously. A large portion of those posts before were complete silliness and fun and now I feel like I am just so rigid and stern and it ends up being more like a list of the things I have done. That equals boring and not fun. And it’s not just blogging, but in life. I will be around certain people that just make me laugh like crazy and I will realize that I haven’t laughed for real for so long. I need to get back to that fun, because this staleness makes me want to just pack up the whole shebang and disappear from “the internets” once and for all.

That being said, the song of the week is Rilo Kiley’s Breakin’ Up, which I have woken up with, in my head, EVERY SINGLE DAY this week. This version doesn’t have the best sound, but it was the only version I could find that played the entire song and wasn’t overpowered by the audience singing along, plus you get to see just how lovely Jenny Lewis is. Now if only I could embed the youtube video into this blog for people to watch right here and now.

Ahoy!

Jus’ wanted t’say ahoy, ‘n remind ye that today be Talk Like A Pirate Day! ARRGH!

Sunday Morning

Geesh, it’s Sunday morning and I just woke up at 11 a.m. I slept for 10 hours, I never sleep that long. After so many nights of just getting 5 hours of sleep I really needed it.

wayne coyne spaceship

So, I’ve been super busy lately, last weekend my sister, matt and my friend elaina and I went to see the Flaming Lips at the Aragon. Great show as usual, they really know how to put on a show. This time they handed out laser pointers to everyone there, and then of course Wayne Coyne, the lead singer, arrives via space ship, gets into his giant blow up ball and climbs out into the audience. As my sister said, They truly are in the business of “entertainment”. If you might be more interested in what this band is about, check out this movie. You might know them from the songs “She Don’t Use Jelly” and “Do You Realize?”. Great music, Great people!

Friday was Nikki’s Benefit at Otto’s Nightclub and everyone has been preparing all week long. I think there were 7 bands and it seemed hundreds of people showed up. I think the night really was a success. We had a good time and got T-shirts that said “Cancer is Stupid”.Last night we went to go see Rilo Kiley at the Riviera and Matt wore his shirt. He got SO MANY compliments, which really got us thinking how wearing that shirt makes you realize how many people are really affected by cancer, whether it be someone surviving it, or a family or friend who is surviving or fought it.

The Rilo Kiley show was great. I had wanted to see them since way back in the day when they first started playing in the 90s. I had bought bought EP, directly from them and when it came in the mail, it actually had drawings on the envelope by Pierre. I would email them and ask, when are you coming to Chicago, and they never would, they just played hollywood and LA, etc. I used to get my name put on their guest list and tell friends living out there to go see them for free. When they finally started touring, I would miss them every time. So now I can say I finally saw them. Oh yeah, and it was funny because we kept seeing laser pointers at their show from people at last weeks flaming lips concert.

My sister and I also went to the Renegade craft show again this year, which was combined with the Division street festival so it was moved out onto the street. I don’t know if it was because of the move or what but it just seemed so much bigger (more booths) than in previous years. I got LOTS of good stuff. My friend elaina had a booth selling her purses under the name LALA Line.

The best booths there had to be between the two following:

Pictured above, there was this great booth that kind of reminded me of Artomat in an even more interactive way, it was “The Postcard Machine”. There was a woman in an enclosed booth and she had a little slit so that she could see out and a microphone so people could hear here and on the box were slots and dials so that you could buy a handmade postcard from her. I LOVED IT. She made clicking sounds when the dial was turned and my sister said “spin it real fast” and when I did her clicking sound sped up like a “BUUUUURRRRR” sound, it was so funny. She also said in a digital voice “the postcard machine has a message for you” and a slip of paper slid out and it said “”You’re not paranoid, the Postcard Machine is WATCHING YOU”. She didn’t have a website, but I will have to email her because I just thought it was such a fabulous idea.

The second booth I wanted to mention was Fernworks. Last year we dropped a wod of cash at her booth and this year was no different. Her artwork is made for me perfectly, being the grass image obsessed person that I am. She uses resin to encase materials such as grass, eggs, birds, etc. in her jewelry. There is ALWAYS a swarm of people in her booth with no room to move.

Back to Basics and Tasha Tudor

Um, I must not have been paying attention close enough when my Granda was talking to me because Tasha Tudor is still alive?!?!?! I just found a link to this site of hers and check out this page that talks about what she is up to lately. According to her site, she is 91 years old. My Grandma loved Tasha Tudor and we always had her books around growing up, but I thought she had probably been born in the 1800s. Honestly, I must have known this because I have this book about her life.  Amazing. I want to live a life like hers, raising chickens, making candles, gardening and creating artwork.

This reminds me of this other really good book that we bought for my mom that has all sorts of instructions on how to do all sorts of traditional skills, from how to make candles, canning, spinning, to taking care of farm animals and woodworking, you name it, it’s covered. It’s a great book to have in your library. Amazon says that out of 53 reviews it has a 5 star rating, pretty impressive.

found art tuesday follow up

As promised . . . I’m posting this weeks Found Art Tuesday. First a story. Last week I was asked why I left last weeks envelope on the same tree and I replied “because I like the idea of the tree being like the tree in To Kill A Mockingbird, with treasures left on it. I drove down the alley this afternoon to see the tree and was SO SAD to see my envelope from last week still there. I figured it was because the first envelope clearly said in large print “FOUND ART” drawing a viewer in more. Last weeks piece might have given people the impression it was meant to be there and so left undisturbed. So after work I had matt drive by it again while I hopped out and grabbed it. I figured I would put it somewhere else, but when I opened it up there was a note inside (see below). I was ecstatic. My piece had become an interactive piece. Someone did check it out and took a prize from inside, one of my homemade buttons with a magnet back.

thanks for the magnet

So today to release this weeks Found Art Tuesday we drove out to St. Charles. I had been wanting to go to the photobooth and figured that would be a perfect place to leave it. I love photobooths so I figure that another photobooth fan would find the piece. We took some photobooth pics, left the piece then went out to eat, came back so that matt could check out the gumball machines, which were located nearby. I had forgotten entirely about the piece when I looked over and there were a couple of people near the photobooth and I noticed a girl was holding my envelope and looking inside (which had more buttons and moo cards). I was so excited and whispered to matt “oh my gosh, that girl, she got my thing” and matt was all “ugh? what are you talking about?” he had forgotten as well and so I had to say “my art, she found and took my art”, I hope that she liked it.

So in the span of one day I’ve had two semi-interactions with my found art. Exciting and scary. I’m getting better, eh? Are you proud of me Rosa, lol?
