Friday Archive

ivory bar and towel, originally uploaded by robayre.

Phew, just in under the wire at just minutes before Saturday.
This is my Friday Archive piece. Student illustration work from 2001. The assignment was to do a still life using two techniques to show texture. I loved the scribble technique ever since I had a life drawing class where we had to use the scribble technique to create a piece using up an entire bick pen. The linework on the soap is not so great, but the scribbling technique worked so beautifully on the towel, it more than made up for lacking in the soap.
Anyway, this piece to me is just another symbol of my college experience. Taking a class in this and then a class in that, which resulted in a Bachelor’s degree in Art, rather than a Fine Art degree in any one area. It was perfect for me because I really love to explore and want to know how to do everything. During my college career I took, photography, ceramics, art history, design, drawing, metalwork, watercolor, bookmaking, illustration, serigraphy, intaglio, lithography, relief, sculpture, 3D fiber arts, illustration, aesthetics and I’m sure I’m missing more, especially the non art classes like the anthropologies, and italian, but you get the idea.
I’m sorta jealous and always impressed with people who have a passion for just one area of art which they can focus their entire attention to and refine and master their skills. But that’s just not me. One minute I want to be spinning yarn, the next moment I MUST paint and it is a never ending cycle. I guess I do have a single passion and that is to be creating, creating, creating non stop and that is fine with me.

Hi, I'm Robyn and I was Hatched from a Kinder Surprise Egg. Graphic Designer by day, Maker of things by night. I have worked as a graphic artist professionally since I was 16 years old. Went on to get my Bachelors of Art from NIU. I like to share my Artwork online at flickr.com/photos/robayre and on my own personal website http://www.robayre.com. I also have an online shop http://www.robayre.etsy.com where you can find more of my "crafty" sorts of things, as well as a random piece of artwork here and there. Oh, and I'm also an occasional contributor to Artomat (artomat.org).

  1. Love that work of art! So much detail and texture for a “simple” bar of Ivory soap. I’m like you in that I can’t stick to 1 thing and I admire people who can and perfect it and love it thru all the years. Right now, I’m focussed on my jewelry creating, but last year it was stamping, year before that it was oil painting, and the year before that…I wonder if people who stick to just one thing envy people like us who can’t. Hmmm…;)

  2. When I started my first BFA..I was a graphic Design major secretly desiring to be a Photo major- but feeling insecure in my future in photo- I felt GD was a safer choice…. after two years I switched- my heart wasn’t in it- I really was passionate about all things photo. I valued the GD years though because it enhanced so many other skills that I use on a regular basis. Then, when I earned my second BFA in Art Education, I was told that I needed to take a larger variety of art classes becuase my past BFA was too centered on GD and Photography… but this was good as it forced me to take courses that I wouldn’t have on my own, (printmaking, painting, life drawing….) Now, I feel fortunate that I had such a breadth in experience with studio arts and intense focus in photo.

  3. Wow, this piece is *amazing*!

I too find it very hard to stick to just one style or medium. I’m curious to know how old you are – I’m beginning to wonder if we were separated at birth! :)

  4. I think the textures are so well done, I imagine you spent a million hours drawing the texture for the towel, and that right there, is determination!
I envy your college experience so much! While you were taking intaglio and ceramics I was stuck in a Concrete 301 class or maybe History of the Entire World, I did my major in Architecture and they make you take all these classes about structures and concrete, which come in handy when you’re actually going to build something, but not if you have your heart on art. oh well…
