ugly scarf

I just finished this scarf I started about a year ago. It was originally titled “The Nicole Scarf” because my friend Nicole who had just begun sewing inspired it. I wanted to make a scarf that was just randomly pieced together and fiber filled and then machine quilted. In my mind it was going to be SO AWESOME! After talking to Nicole more, I had even thought about taking it further past it’s current spot and painting and collaging on top of it. It was going to be so quick, I was going to finish this thing so swiftly. Yep, well, after realizing that my little baby sewing machine could not handle the quilting, I had to borrow my mom’s pfaff. Then I ran out of thread. Then it was put on the shelf and not touched again until last week. And then I ran out of thread AGAIN. And now I just finally finished it.

It has been officially renamed, The Ugly Scarf, no offense to Nicole. She’s actually adorable, and nothing like the scarf, see her above on the left.

It is so bad, people. It would be impossible to now paint, and collage, on top of this hideousness. My initial plan was to wash, and wash, and wash it so that it would be soft and worn and not so bulky and stiff. I haven’t done that yet, so there may still be hope for it yet. But those colors, eeesh, they hurt to look at, all up next to each other like that. Sad thing is, they are some of my most favorite fabrics, they just don’t necessarily work very well next to each other. I always have these ideas of just throwing everything together and how much of a marvelous mess it will become and it will end up looking great. It never works out that way. I tried that same technique one time with another scarf, but using a tiny bit of every yarn I have, oh it was so bad.

edit: Nicole just messaged me that Ugly Scarf needs a theme song, kind of like “smelly cat” from Friends.

  1. Wow! All those lines of quilting must make it pretty stiff. But I don’t think the colors are awful. It’s like a crazy quilt, only more organized. ;)

  2. I actually think it’s a beautiful ugly scarf. I’m not sure about the red and white stripe and green at the far end, but I like all the other colors together.
And with painting and collaging on top of it, it wouldn’t make much sense as a real scarf anyway, but rather as a wallhanging. And for a wallhanging it doesn’t matter at all that it’s stiff.
