recycled ornament

recycled ornament, originally uploaded by robayre.

Last night matt and I worked on this ornament. I had visions of covering a tree with these recycled ornaments after seeing them here. But, shortly after starting, I realized it would be a bit of work. Starting with 4 inch square pieces of paper cut from a Toast catalog, this ornament is about 6 inches in diameter, so it is a little big to be hanging from a tree. It also took us about 3 hours to put it together, working non stop in a fast paced, competitive “who can make more pieces” mode. Oh yeah, and it said to use glue, but we cheated and used this double faced gummy tape stuff, which made it go A LOT faster.

Maybe one decoration a year is more feasible.

Hi, I'm Robyn and I was Hatched from a Kinder Surprise Egg. Graphic Designer by day, Maker of things by night. I have worked as a graphic artist professionally since I was 16 years old. Went on to get my Bachelors of Art from NIU. I like to share my Artwork online at flickr.com/photos/robayre and on my own personal website http://www.robayre.com. I also have an online shop http://www.robayre.etsy.com where you can find more of my "crafty" sorts of things, as well as a random piece of artwork here and there. Oh, and I'm also an occasional contributor to Artomat (artomat.org).

  1. omigosh, i love it! it looks a lot like origami, i love origami. Did you tried stapling it together? I once did a hanging thingy, like a mobile, with paper. The staples saved my life

  2. I like it! And I had to laugh at Rosa’s comment about stapling. It made me think of making frames (or trying).

But you didn’t answer the most important question…Who won?! :)

  3. Well, I won on folding a single, but he (almost) won on the overall. When we started competing, it was down to 20 singles and he did 10 and I did 10, but I was just barely able to grab my last one before he would have grabbed it.

  4. this is bewtiful! believe it or not i started making origami ornaments this year too. haven’t made anything this fabulous though. i totally want to try it now.

also, sorry we missed your opening on sunday. went to see santa and Isaiah had a minor breakdown on our way to see you so we gave in. i think it was just too cold for the little one. hope it went well!
