Good Things Come in Threes

One

3.12.12 Hus & Hem
Recently I was thrilled to see I sold one of my alphabet posters. Glancing at my stats I noticed views up on that poster. I did a bit of sleuthing and discovered that my poster was featured on the blog for Swedish magazine Hus & Hem! I’ve been thinking that I should make some more pieces like these, maybe one with numbers and some with phrases. You might remember this piece stemmed from the series of Polaroid Pogo prints I did in 2009. I can’t wait for spring to arrive so I can scout out some moss and get going on more posters.

About a third of my #artomat collection

I love Art-o-mat. It’s no secret. I’m thrilled to announce that my collection of Art-o-mat artwork (pieces that I have purchased by other artists at various Art-o-mat machines) will be on display at Kishwaukee College. Once I get them out to the school, they will be in a display case in the brand new Student Center through the end of the semester, near Kish’s Art-0-mat machine. Once they are at the school I hope to get some pictures and will share them here.  I also hope that this display may spark an interest in art collectors from the community to visit this very special diamond that we are so lucky to have nearby. Who knows, maybe this post will inspire you to check and see where your nearest Art-o-mat is and visit it. Did I mention that it is also a great time to be a contributing Art-o-mat artist? Artwork to fill the machines is in high demand!

Dacia at the na-da farm barn sale yoyos and chalkboard sign

I will be selling again at the Na-Da Farm Spring Sale this year. I’m especially excited this year, having one year under my belt and knowing a bit more of what to expect. I’m also REALLY excited because my friends Courtney of She Always Loved Larking (Etsy) and Ann of A Beautiful Party (Etsy) will also be selling at the event. We are going to have so much fun! If you like fun (and who doesn’t?) then you should come to the event as well.

Alphabet Poster with Moss

This poster idea has been in my brain for years and I am sooo glad to have finally executed it and now offer it in my etsy shop.

The idea began back in 2009 when I started my ongoing series of polaroid pogo prints, which you can read about here.

Do you know how hard it is to find good moss, let alone a large enough area that is consistent? Well, it took me since 2009 to find it. I’m glad that I kept hunting though. I think this poster would be a great piece for a nature themed child’s bedroom, or even the classroom. That being said, I also think it would go great in a living room, as that is where mine has been, not that I’m prejudiced or anything.

This poster is 16″x20″ which is a standard poster size, so frames this size are readily available. I bought the wooden frame in the photo above for only $12. The poster itself is professionally printed on matte photo paper. Please check out the listing on Etsy for more information.

I hope you like it. I’ve had poster design on the brain for a couple of years now and this is my very first, with hopefully more to come.

Birthday Presents – Fuji Instax 210

10.5.11 instax
For my birthday I got some AWESOME presents. For real awesome, not just “yay, socks and underwear” awesome. I’ll have to post a couple separate posts to share. My brother and sister in law got me the Fuji Film Instax 210. I’ve been wanting one of these forever, but could never justify spending that much.

10.5.11 instax shot
People, it.is.so.awesome! It’s an instant camera, much like the beloved old days of Polaroid instant. The only (itty bitty) downfall (for me) is that the pictures are rectangular, where my heart really lies in the square format. Thinking about that, it’s kind of funny because in art school we were always ushered away from using a square format because it is harder to create balanced compositions, but I’m a rebel. Back to the camera, did I mention it’s awesome? Because it is. It comes with a lens to take close up pictures. What I would have done for one of those on my old polaroids (shaking fists towards the sky). If you are unfamiliar with instant fuji film, they also have pull apart films that I use on my Polaroid Colorpack II Landcamera. They have a second smaller Instax camera that comes in white and takes itty bitty baby instant pictures. I preferred the larger just because I already have my Polaroid Pogo Printer, which prints tiny digital pictures from your camera or phone.

When Polaroid announced that they would no longer be producing instant film I went into hoarding mode. Sadly, I still have packs left because I was afraid to use them all up, but the film is going bad because they are all REALLY expired. I realized with this new camera, only 2 pictures in, and I’m already being waaaaay to cautious about using the film.  I need to lighten and loosen up and have some fun. I need to take pictures and enjoy my birthday present.

Instant film aside, I realized the other day that it was a good thing that I’d fallen in love with instagram and taking pictures with my iphone because since we moved I couldn’t find our battery charger. If it weren’t for camera phones, no pictures would be taken during this time. A few weeks ago I broke down and just bought regular batteries at the store to tide me over. Next thing ya know, Matt uses them, AND the batteries from my camera, to put into his wii-motes. Yesterday after hunting (for what felt like hours hours) through boxes of storage in the basement I finally had a meltdown. That was all it took for Matt to go to the basement and 10 minutes later return with the battery charger, sigh. Well, now I can take pictures AND Matt can have friends over to play Super Smash Bros.

Day Four – ‘Roid Week 2010

Here’s a polaroid izone picture of my yoyo quilt. This picture is probably from ’98 or ’99. Remember izone? I still mourn the end of izone. I remember a picture my friend Nicole D. and I took and stuck on the toll booth leaving town. Remember “change” toll booths in Illinois? Those are all but gone too. Times change.

I love Polaroid, and that means ALL Polaroid products. In other words, I am a sucker for a Polaroid gimmick. This has led me, time and time again, to be disappointed when they’ve discontinued products…until at last the FINAL discontinuation of ALL instant photos. That is, but one last gimmick, and I’ve used this blog as a stage to plug it over and over. POLAROID POGO! Take pictures with any digital picture, carry your portable pogo printer with you and print little Polaroid pictures on the go. Here you can read a previous post all about how it works.

5.6 polaroid zink 002  self portrait with a nest

Here is a Polaroid Pogo print and the original file from which it was printed. If you click on the images it will take you to their flickr pages so you can see them larger. Each pogo also can double as a sticker, if you peel off the release paper on the back. I love my printer and of course I think everyone should get one. I think they were even going to carry a printer and camera in one, so you can take the pictures on the digital Polaroid and print them straight from the camera, but I haven’t seen any of them out there yet.

edit: I forgot to mention I also offer mounted Polaroid Pogo prints in my Etsy shop, check them out here.

2009-2010 part I

2009 was a good year to me! I can honestly say I felt happier overall last year than I have in a long time. It was so wonderful in fact that I (in a very twisted manner) have entered 2010 with a bit of caution that all the things that made 2009 great will come crashing down on me. I’m a subscriber to the Law of Attraction and that I create what comes to me and I felt like last year I saw a glimmer of the possibilities in action. Conversely, I should know then that having any negative thoughts and fears of losing what I have is a sure way of starting off a bad year.

Last year I was so inspired to create a list of things I wanted to accomplish in 2009 and I think it made for a wonderful year. With the success of last year I have been working on 2010s list and will be share it as the next parts to this blog post. (I don’t think I posted last years list till February 1st, 2009)

I wasn’t able to complete all items off the 2009 list but I am perfectly fine with that. I think I got more accomplished than normal because of the list and plan on just adding the remaining items to 2010′s list. I’m so proud of all the things that I was able to cross off and had such a fun time doing it. This is going to be a long enough post as it is, so to save space you can revisit those items by clicking on this link.

Some highlights from last year (not on the list):

ETSY
Early on in the year I realized I had been selling items in my Etsy shop more steadily than before. I’ve been on Etsy since 2005. I didn’t list or sell any items until a year later. I read often in the Etsy forums where people are so frustrated that they aren’t experiencing immediate success and are frustrated that they haven’t had a sale in a whole month. Since being on Etsy I’ve taken more of the “slow and steady wins the race” route. I’d rather sell the things that are meaningful to me and stay true to my vision and style, rather than just making what sells (skulls, owls, twilight, etc.) I’d rather continue to build momentum to eventually become a lasting power, than strike hot and fizzle quickly. This year I was so thrilled to see results toward progress. In early Etsy years I stated that I’d like to grow slowly where I’d eventually sell an item a week, then a couple items a week, then an item a day, until I reach multiple sales a day. Without aiming for 2009 to be the year that I sell an item a week it happened. I was delighted to notice in the spring that my sales were averaged out to be slightly ahead of 1 sale a week. Ecstatically the ball kept rolling all year round. There were a few times where weeks and weeks would pass by without any sales and I’d think my luck had run out, but then things would turn around again and I’d make up for the lost time. My first year (2006) I had 6 sales, in 2007 I had 10 sales, in 2008 I had 42, and in 2009 I had 77 sales. I also went over 100 sales finally. I don’t know if anyone could know just how proud I am of this. Since I was little I have dreamed of being able to sell the little things I create and it wasn’t until Etsy came around that I finally had an outlet for that. I will be forever grateful to Etsy for being in my life. Forever grateful.

Weight Loss
Technically this item wasn’t on my list, but by adding sparkpeople and trying to get down to a certain dress size to the list, it was there in a round about way. New year’s resolutions of losing weight are stupid to me, so I just put it on my list hoping that I would be inspired when the time was right. That was in May. Since then I have been transformed and am thrilled with my progress. It is something I’ve struggled with probably since puberty.  I know I am much healthier and can feel it with every motion o f my body. But honestly more important, losing the weight has built up my self confidence and allowed me to feel comfortable being me. I feel like I can do more things that I want to do in life because I’m not feeling as bad about myself or saying I’ll do this or that once I’ve lost the weight. I also feel comfortable meeting new people and being around others in general. I still have a way to go, but I am just so happy with how far I went with this in 2009. I’ve been setting up rewards for mini goals along the way and hopefully this spring I will reach the goal where I will buy myself some nice tall boots. Can’t wait!

Car Accident
This is something I would never add to the list but it was a huge event this year. In June while riding my bike home from work, I was hit by an SUV that was pulling out of a parking lot and wasn’t paying attention for pedestrians. My bike was crushed and I only suffered a severe sprain after I was thrown out into the street. It put a damper on getting around this summer as I was limited physically and wasn’t able to cross off  running c25k because of it. It put me into an emotional state for a month or two, where I’d cry at a drop of a hat and become so overwhelmed with fear I’d start physically shaking. As bad as all of those things sound I AM BEYOND GRATEFUL and that it could have been so much worse. Even writing this, I’m beginning to cry again. The honest truth is my life could have ended that day. I have several very close friends who are going through some life threatening health issues. It could be a very dark time. But talking with my mom one day helped me to keep it in perspective. No one knows when it will be their time, so it is best to live our life to the fullest and make the most of every day. I can be so cliche and I’ve heard that saying probably dozens of times throughout my life, but last year it really left an impact.  Early 2009 a great mentor of mine died too young, but while he lived he made a great impact on me and many others. His life messages were to help others and TREASURE LIFE, in fact that was what his license plates said (TRSRLFE). I feel making a yearly list I’m on the right path. I still have lazy and unproductive days but in general I feel much better and hope that I can continue to live this way through 2010 and beyond.

A few other highlights of things that happened this year, but were not on the 2009 list.

I worked my full time job only 4 days a week and had Fridays off all year long. Matt got a new car and I got rid of my old beater and we’ve been a one car household. I sent off my second series of Art-o-mat paintings, and created this pretty sweet promo video. I published my very first zine. I was able to find a source and make these resin jewelry pieces like I’d been envisioning for years. Got a Polaroid Pogo and love it! Matt and I went to go see the This American Life live broadcast. Made an art doll (scary) and sold my first handspun yarns. Sadly I think I only did Found Art Tuesday twice all year. Bishop ate my enemy (styrofoam) and had to have emergency surgery. I made some altered art shoes and then they were featured on AOL. I finally had a garden again, since last I lived with my parents. It was a container garden but I had SO MUCH JOY from it. Went to a family reunion. Was published in Underground Art School magazine. Made homemade pizza. Attended my cousin’s Ah-Mazing wedding. My brother and sister-in-law are expecting their first child and I will be an Aunt this March for the first time. I wrote a few articles for the Hello Craft blog. I took a ceramics class and was so inspired. Held my fourth gingerbread house making party. Went sledding and laughed so hard I think I breathed in snow and froze my lungs. I lost my wallet and kept my cool about it, surprisingly. Made new penpals and pfeffernusse cookies. Our friends Tom and Nikki, and Matt and I went ice skating in Chicago. It was something I’d wanted to do probably since high school (and really should have been on my 2009 list) when I first learned about Skate on State. Since then the Millennium Park has been built and they erect an ice skating rink there in the winter so we went there. It started out a rainy miserable day, but when we finally got out on the ice it began snowing and became an amazing and magical day/evening.

As I put together that list it’s surprising how much I’d probably forget if it weren’t for this blog. This week I’ve been in a kind of funk, where I didn’t feel very energetic, inspired or driven. I hate that feeling. Lazy. But yesterday and today I’ve been composing this post and it alone has really inspired me. I am reinvigorated just looking back at all that I accomplished last year and I’m again so excited for the new year. I apologize for such a looooong post (without one picture, yikes). I’m sure no one even got this far in the post, but that’s okay because it’s really just for me anyway. I’ll be sharing my to-do list for 2010 shortly (in the coming week).

new polaroid pogo series

I’m finally getting around to share my latest Polaroid Pogo series. As you can see I’ve been working on it since the magnolia was in bloom.

At the beginning of spring when nature’s fleeting blossoms were all around, I was so inspired to start this series. After shooting some of my favorites like the forsythia I realized that just the golden flowers weren’t enough. I remembered the Found Art Tuesday “time to grow” piece and my last Polaroid pogo images, and wished there was some way to use my box of pin letters. I finally got the idea of using a branch to attach the letters, but I still was stuck on what words to use. I was so inspired by spring, and how everything is green and new and like that it came to me… fresh, everything is fresh. But fresh also has another connotation, in modern slang and terminology, Fresh is “COOL”. Aha! My next series would be beautiful images from nature juxtaposed by modern culture and design! Matt keeps singing Outkast’s So Fresh and so Clean, and I have to admit it was in my head when I made the magnolia piece.

I really love this series.

Currently I have four images in this series. The words So Fresh over magnolia blossoms, shown above.

The word awesome over new growth grass. Everyone knows how much I love grass and this picture was taken before the lawn was mowed for the first time this spring. It was so lush and green, ahhhh!

The word tight over a well manicured bush. The sky was perfect for this shot with one single little cloud.

and lastly, the word Sweet over damp earth and luscious green moss.

These petite and affordable prints are all currently available in my etsy shop. Click on any of the above images to find out more about them.

OH YEAH! polaroid pogo

I’m very excited to share that I finally got the Polaroid Pogo that I’ve been talking about forever. And believe me it is AWESOME! Trust me, you want one of these. I’ve been telling everyone that because 1. of it’s awesomeocity, and 2. because I don’t want Polaroid to end up discontinuing this product, so the more people who have one and use it, the better the chances for it’s longevity. But to be honest, everyone that I have shown it to has LOVED it and wants one as well. The proof is in the pudding, as they say.

It prints without ink. Before buying this I was skeptical, thinking there were just small ink packs that were included in each paper pack, but noooo, it really doesn’t use any ink. Here is how it works, if you are interested in the details. Basically it uses this new Zink (zero ink technology) where cyan, magenta and yellow ink crystals are layered on each paper and activated through heat, during the printing process.

Oh yeah, and did I mention that it can print from your digital camera, computer OR wirelessly through bluetooth on your camera phone! Each image is 2”x3”, can print from anywhere (doesn’t need to be plugged into the wall), prints don’t rip or tear, comes with an adhesive back, and because of the Zink, doesn’t smear or smudge ever!

We’re living in the future, People.

The night I bought it, as I was in bed trying to fall asleep, the idea came to me to mount the prints on photo matte and offer small prints in my etsy shop. Because of the medium, the prints come out very different than the original image. There is a definite graininess and color shift as well as changes in contrast, etc., which like original Polaroid instant pictures, makes them very unique and different. I will be listing Polaroid Pogo prints in my shop as they come. I have already listed the above print in my shop.

I’m so excited, can you tell yet?

Thing-a-day and printer obsession

Tomorrow, registration for “Thing-a-day” opens, I’m so excited. I had such a great experience last year, feeling so productive and really energized by the sense of community. I’m also excited by the challenge. If this month was a challenge posting daily here, can’t wait till next month when I try to continue posting daily here AND creating something new everyday to post there as well, oy vey! I’d love to invite all my bloggy friends to participate. I always love reading your posts and participating means new posts daily, ahh heaven.

This weekend after reading more and more about Polaroids possible rejuvenation, I was so driven to buy one of the polaroid pogos. Oh man, I want one so bad. We actually drove to Target and I had it in my hands, I drove with it in my cart to the front counter and at the last minute decided that it is not a neccessity, turned around and put it back on the shelf. I really should wait till a better time when I can afford it, rather than put it on a credit card. Times are tough and I am finally feeling the affects of the economic downturn in the last month or two. I had already made a promise to myself that I wouldn’t make any big purchases, until I feel I have really earned or deserve it. Perhaps when I get my tax refund :) I just know when I do finally get the pogo, it will mean that much more. Another thing is that while we were at Target, they actually had the canon selphy in stock, which is a compact canon printer (not as small as the pogo, but probably about a 1/4 of the size of my regular desktop printer.) It also doesn’t use ink cartridges and has smudge proof, water proof prints that can be printed straight from your camera. It was also $100 and I want it as well.

What on earth does a girl need 3 printers for? For fun, of course.

Polaroid Pogo

While erica and I were on our trip we took lots of pictures. She had this really awesome canon compact printer that is roughly? 6x8x4 inches in size and allows you print pictures, postcards and stickers from your digital camera. It turned out such great quality pictures in the matter of moments. Another great thing is that each paper pack comes with the amount of ink it requires to print all the pictures, so no need to buy paper packs and ink separately, or worrying about running out of ink before paper, etc. It’s something like this.

I was determined to buy one for myself and headed to Target, where she bought hers. They were sold out of compact printers, but what I did see was the Polaroid Pogo. Have you heard of this? I saw this and immediately thought “oh, no!” Imagine the canon compact printer, only 1/3 the size AND can print from your bluetooth camera phone. I’m assuming this means it runs on batteries and you can then print there and then, where ever you are at the time. This is something right up my alley. I assume this is their method of appeasing the disappointed crowd of customers who have been left without polaroid instant film. I would have scooped it up in a heartbeat, had I not started running down the list of times Polaroid has lured me in with a new product, only to discontinue it in a few short years. Well, that and the fact that I haven’t stepped into modern times with a bluetooth compatible phone.

I concluded that I would live happily without the Polaroid Pogo. That was, until I clicked on this link over at 52 Projects.

“They’re small, about 1.5×2″ (they say they’re 2×3 but they’re not.  Very contrasty, not very color correct, but in my book they’re not supposed to look good. They look like mini polaroids.  Kinda like the mini bites at Cinnabon.”

That was all it took to read, and now I want one…and a new phone.
