I read this yesterday and needed time to digest it. My DH used to be an amateur bicycle racer in his free time. He would spend hours and hours on his bike after work each day racking up hundreds of miles each week.

His being injured like this was always a worry to me. I knew several others who were not so lucky. I'm glad it's just your ankle that's hurt. Scary stuff! Sounds like a new bike may be in order too.

Hope you are feeling better really soon!

Oh my! This is terrible!! I am sure you will have a speedy recovery. Thinking of you and knowing you will bounce back!

So: crutches. I had to use them once for two months. Here is my best tip: get a plastic stepstool for the shower - seriously it will make things so much easier. Avoid the "chairs" that are for the elderly - they suck, plus after you are off crutches you will have a great stepstool!! It can remind you of this period of time, which will be very important in your life. You will never again take for granted how easily "before crutches" it was for you to have the urge to pee and simply walk to the potty. Because you are going to have to plan ahead a little for a while. It will be okay.

Another tip - if you don't have one, get one of those plastic rectangular laundry baskets. You can use it to carry things around your apartment. Simply place both crutches and the item you need to carry IN the basket. Then by hopping on one foot, lean forward and "glide" to where you need to go - dog sled style. This is primarily how I was able to get things done at home.

One last thing: when I was on crutches I got pretty depressed at times. Maybe you will and maybe you won't. But I think it is natural to feel this way. I had a hard time asking people for help at times, because it seemed like I was asking for help for a LOT of thing a LOT of the times and that it was for things that seemed so small and silly but necessary. You should know: this is the best lesson I learned from being on crutches. It's okay to ask for help when you need it, because the people that love you are happy to do it and it makes them feel all lovey dovey. We don't always get the opportunity to take care of the ones we love - but that is such a great feeling, isn't it? Then when you are all better, you will be in the habit of letting people you love do things for you, and they will feel the love and you will feel the love and that will just make your life more awesome.

Do I get a prize for longest comment ever left on this blog? Cuz I want one.

wishing you well... i was once hit in chicago... while crossing an intersection, with the walk sign on... the car slowed down, and then sped away... argh...

hopefully the frame is intact... will the person who hit you take care of repairs and replacements for the bike, as needed?

You are totally in my prayers. This makes me a little weary to take my son out on my bike/trailer combo. There are SUV's EVERYWHERE here, driven by everyone from mom's to teenage boys and girls. (Yikes!) I used to have a flamboyantly gay man who had moved from New York as a boss and the thing he said that scared him the most about living in the foothills of California was all the tiny women driving HUGE SUV's and trucks.

Wow!! I'm SO glad you're okay. Ironically I've been hit on a bike as well...twice. And I know how much it SUCKS. But I definitely didn't get as hurt as you. I just remember being more emotionally hurt and bruised. I just laid in bed and cried and cried and cried because it shook me up so much. Then my dad made me a steamed milk with vanilla flavoring and blue food coloring and called it a 'Blue Moon.' Totally random I know...but it did make me feel better emotionally. Something about hot drinks, I tell ya. I'll be praying everything is okay with you (which it is) and hope you heal up quickly. I hope the bike body survived. P.s. I made my first Etsy Treasury. YEAH! So confusing at first but YEAH! Keep me posted on how you're doin!

Oh, Robyn, I hope you are feeling better in all ways today and we have you in our thoughts. And your little bike, too. :) We had a Jeep we loved. I got Bessie in 1987 and she was just like new forever. I used to quip that through my hell divorce I came out with huge debt, lost everyone & everything, was an emotional wreck and my triumph ~ my boys, my Minolta and my Bessie. When we couldn't afford to fix her in 2003 & had to give her up, it broke our hearts. We still talk about that Jeep. I swear Evan is going to find her one day, get her back and restore her to our family. I know you will fare much better. Gentle hugs across the miles to you. ox
