The first thing I noticed in the name Chris McCandless is "candle" - as in "light the way." But, he is candle-less so he cannot find his way. "Mc" means "son of." "Chris" means "Christ bearer." Basically the characters name illustrates that Chris' father could not find his way in life and Chris is there to show him how to live fully by giving up his own.
